RIM withdrew its takeover bid for Certicom Corp after their court order blocked the deal. RIM announced Dec. 3 that it would offer 1.5 Canadian dollars ($1.20) per share, or about 66 million Canadian dollars ($52.6 million) for Certicom, which makes digital encryption technology for wireless communications. Certicom, based in Mississauga, Ontario, asked for an injunction against the takeover, arguing RIM had violated a 2007 nondisclosure agreement between the companies and used Certicom’s proprietary information in drawing up its offer to shareholders.
The companies had been in contact since 2007 about a possible deal, but Certicom refused to grant RIM exclusive buyout talks and said it would look for competing offers.
Monday’s court ruling means Certicom shareholders will not be able to accept RIM’s offer and that RIM will not be allowed to make competing offers should another buyer come forward.

We take it for granted in the US when we have all these new smartphone models coming out and complain why our carrier is getting after everyone else. The Pearl 8100 is about two years old and change, yet there are countries and providers just getting it for the first time like Fido.
Fido was the first Canadian mobile service provider to bill airtime by the second, not by the minute as other providers have done and still do. Clearnet Communications joined the Canadian Wireless Market with an Urban Focus similar to Fido and also offered per second billing. Shortly after the introduction of Fido and Clearnet, Rogers AT&T (now Rogers Wireless), Bell Mobility and Telus Mobility also started offering per second billing. Telus acquired Clearnet in 2000 and the three major cellular providers in Canada reverted back to per-minute billing in the summer of 2002. Fido is currently the only company to offer an Over-the-Counter exchange for phones that fail during the manufacturer’s one year warranty period (with a refurbished unit after the 15 day return period). Fido also formalized the upgrade process for newer phones by offering “Fido Dollars”, equivalent to 5% of customer revenues, which can be used towards the purchase of a new handset at any time even when purchasing a phone with a new agreement. Fido dollars can be used when renewing service with a new agreement. They are also the only company to include a “minute tracker” system free of charge with every monthly plan, which sends a text message to customers when they reach 75% and 100% of the minutes included in their monthly package.
Theyre no contract VS contract pricing seems pretty fair too. Anyway here’s the scoop:
The Pearl will be priced at:
- $400 MTM / No Contract
- $350 on a 2 Year
- $25 on a 3 year w/ Voice + Data (no minimum monthly total cost required).
The data plans will be:
- $15 – Unlimited Personal Email
- $25 – 500MB BIS Data
- $30 – 1GB BIS Data
- $60 – 3GB BIS Data

They did it again. Administrative fees went from 75 cent to 99 cents. What does this mean? To all you Sprint customers out there, you can cancel your Sprint service if you are unhappy with it without any fear of an early termination fee. Just to clear up a few things lets start from the beginning.
A proposed national settlement has been reached in a class action proceeding alleging that Sprint, Nextel and/or Sprint Nextel’s use of a flat-rate early termination fee (ETF) in its customer wireless agreement violate the Federal Communications Act and consumer protection laws of the states and of the United States. Sprint Nextel denies any liability or wrongdoing but has agreed to settle under the terms of the Settlement Agreement. A copy of the Settlement Agreement is available by clicking on Settlement Agreement. The capitalized terms used here have the meanings as in the Settlement Agreement.
On December 8, 2008, the Court preliminarily approved the Settlement Agreement and has conditionally certified a class (the Settlement Class), consisting of:
All Persons in the United States who are or were parties to a personal fixed-term subscriber agreement for a Sprint Nextel Wireless Service Account for personal or mixed business/personal use, whether on the Sprint CDMA network or Nextel iDEN network, or both, excluding accounts for which the responsible party for the Wireless Service Account is a business, corporation or a governmental entity, entered into between July 1, 1999 and December 31, 2008 and whose claims relate in any way to an Early Termination Fee or use of an Early Termination Fee in a fixed-term subscriber agreement, and/or use or propriety of a fixed-term subscriber agreement whether the term was for the initial fixed-term subscriber agreement or subsequent extensions or renewals to the fixed-term subscriber agreement for whatever reason and/or who were charged by or paid an Early Termination Fee to Sprint Nextel, excluding only the Ayyad Class Claims and Persons whose right to sue Sprint Nextel as a Settlement Class Member is otherwise barred by a prior settlement agreement and/or prior final adjudication on the merits. The Settlement Class includes Persons who were subject to an ETF, whether or not they paid any portion of the ETF either to Sprint Nextel or to any outside collection agency or at all, and includes persons who are prosecuting excluded claims to the extent such persons have claims other than those expressly excluded. Also excluded from the Class are members of the judiciary, Defendants, any entity in which they have a controlling interest, and their officers and directors, and the members of their immediate families are excluded.

It’s an all new Bold 9000 theme for those bored of the normal “sketched” theme that’s already displayed. Both stock themes are exactly the same, just one colored differently than the other… Anyway, this theme is completely different and might I add very sexy. The bottom dock actually slides back and forth. Icons are a bit different, giving you that technology-industrious look. Download it free here

At one point earlier this summer, Nokia confirmed that it was keeping BlackBerry functionalities off their future devices. This was quite a bummer for those using BlackBerry Connect but wanted to upgrade. Nokia has just annouced that it will be integrating the BB Connect again, I guess after weighing out the pros and cons. The E series Nokia phones will be getting this feature first. There is no official release date of such event happening yet, but a head’s up to all you s60 lovers out there, it is coming.

In celebration of our 44th President Barrack Obama, Peek has released their device for only $44.44 today. We saw last week where Peek had a $299.95 offer, including free internet access for the life of the device. In today’s case, the offer is just for the actual Peek device, and will be $19.99 per month to use. Still a great deal for those in need of a strict emailing device.
