BlackBerry Bold OS 4.6.0.297 via AT&T Wireless Aftermath
by The PocketBerry Team
It’s a surprise to all of us seeing that AT&T put out the latest BlackBerry OS as they are always so slow with it. Who remembers the official versions of OS 4.5? Devices were just coming into 4.6 and AT&T was still putting out OS 4.5 for Curves and Pearls.
Plenty of BlackBerry Bold owners via AT&T (and other carriers if you delete the vendor.xml!) today got the chance to update wirelessly over the air for the first time ever as Verizon was the only other US Carrier to have the wireless update. Desktop files were also available to download to install through BlackBerry Desktop Manager. maintenance

So what do we think of this update? We’re fascinated by the minor freezes getting fixed and removed out of the OS as though the “hour glass” or “ticking clock” were deleted out of the OS (not really but metaphorically speaking). Visual Voicemail is a huge plus, as many iPhone users now have one less thing to show off to BlackBerry users. Don’t forget, you must login to your AT&T account on your computer to activate Visual Voicemail (as seen above) or dial 611 from your handset and ask a rep to activate it! After that, there are some strings attached features to the Visual Voicemail. Getting new voicemail will now appear in your messages by default as you will have to disable those functions from the options if you decide that the settings don’t cater to you.
And just like we saw in 4.6.0.282 which was not released for AT&T but many of us went ahead with it any way, users can now choose to to switch between 2G and 3G as they are available or force it into 2G only. What are the benefits? It obviously saves lots of your battery. If you know you are going to be charger-less for a few hours throughout the day, put it on 2G, as it will not affect the clarity of your text messages, phone calls, and email sending/receiving. If you are YouTubing then you may want to flick on 3G, but other than that there is no need.
Complaints? Everybody is angry about the third party software all over the device. Indeed AT&T has gone ahead and threw lots and lots of icons for you to gather in a junk folder or simply hide. Other than that, you should see an overall better experience with the OS. Always to be safe, give your phone a nice battery pull and service book re-send after the OS finishes updating.
