The Flashlight App: Worst Invested Application at $2.99?

Our buddy Eric from Obstacles Can Kill wrote an interesting article about an application available on the BlackBerry App World known as “The Flashlight.” It is no secret that this application uses your camera’s light as it states it in its own title. Eric went ahead and pointed out some punch lines thrown out there by the “app makers” that proved itself to be a waste.

“This is the only flash light app that uses the video camera light, and not the Main Screen light as used in other apps.
“One touch to turn it on, and one touch to turn it off. It is simple to use.”
“**** IMPORTANT PLEASE READ **** Note: This flashlight app uses the video camera (no recording) and light.”
“Simple, one time only, video camera “Options” settings are required:
- “Open your video camera, click on the Menu button and choose “Options”.
- “Set “Video Light” to “ON”.”

So what do we make out of this? The Flashlight just provides a shortcut to your BlackBerry’s light that is going through your video camera any way but just disables the video camera’s function.

Eric then provides a strategy on how to get at this application for free without wasting your $2.99:

Open your video camera application.
Turn on the Video Light either using the instructions above or by simply pressing the space bar. (NOTE: If you leave this set on by default, it WILL come back on next time you open the application).

All in all, don’t waste your money on rubbish applications when you can just do what it does yourself.
