[28 Dec 2009 | No Comment | ]

Earlier this month, the Storm 2 9550 got the same OS leak leaving the 9520 behind.  Just in late last night we got the word that a 5.0.0.428 was also floating around for the 9520.  The link won’t be active for long as it is leaked and not officially released by RIM.  Download at your own risk and let us know of any changes you see.  Enjoy.

You thought BrickBreaker was addictive? You haven’t seen Aces Traffic Pack yet then.  This game is pretty self explanatory.  Making an exit for your car in these tight angles and spots can get difficult.  Many of you end up losing interest in mobile games because there’s that assumption that mobile games are short and can be finished within a day.  Aces Traffic Pack has well over 475 different puzzles you’ll have to park yourself through.  Aside from the GT game series which are currently in the BlackBerry App World, I enjoy playing Aces Traffic Pack.  Besides it being very addictve and challenging, the graphics are pretty damn good too.  Most mobile games lack clarity and color definition and focus too much on the actual functionality but this game gives you it all. The Mysterious BlackBerry

I can just imagine what the beta testing facility consists of at Research in Motion.  We all fail to acknowledge that there are BlackBerry prototypes which float around without us ever hearing or seeing anything about them.  Here’s a very odd prototype that looks something like an HTC phone and perhaps has a slider keyboard in landscape mode.  What we see in the image is a trackball in between the BlackBerry button and back button.  The device is of course touch screen but looks quite old if you ask me.  Trackballs are old news folks, so consider yourself rockin’ a throwback if you have a trackball still (sorry Tour users).  There’s not much to say about this leaked image, other than the fact that it looks quite old and not attractive at all.

8530 shortcut keys

As the BlackBerry Curve 8530 is allegedly a basic model, it’s got some features that all the new and upcoming devices from RIM have.  One of which is the all new rubberized convenience and volume keys.  If you ask me, these rubberized keys look a lot sleeker than the cheap chrome buttons that wobble all over the place.  As Mac spent the past week using the device, I had to put some input of my own as I have an 8530 myself (was fortunate enough not to have it in purple).  The convenience keys don’t make loud noise or make it hard to press at all.  As seen in the picture, they are simple oval shaped wedges that pop out of the rubber all on the same surface.  The other side gets another convenience key as well.  This side seen shows two volume keys along with a convenience key underneath.

qwerty

Besides having push email, awesome apps, and sleek looks, the BlackBerry gains high popularity for its QWERTY keyboard.  Without even mentioning, we all know that there are SureType devices such as the 71xx and 81xx series.  Upcoming is the new Pearl 9100 which sounds pretty promising so far.  Back to the QWERTY, the BlackBerry Curve 8530 which we have been testing for well over a week does have a QWERTY keyboard (obviously).

We hate comparing the 8530 to higher ranked devices such as the Bold 9700, but there is a huge difference we see.  The keyboard is the same style as the other Curve 83xx and 8900 series as the keys are all spaced out more.  This one is more like the 83xx series where they are tougher plastic material and make a whole lot of sound when typing.  If you’re looking to get away with typing on your Berry in a very quite workplace, then don’t get the 8530.  For everyone else, you’ll be fine and won’t have much to say upgrading from other Curve series (except the 8900).

bb edge network

Believe it or not, our knowledge is very limited when it comes to network capabilities of carriers.  We have distractions all around talking about 3G and 4G networks coming to carriers and mobile platforms.  What we don’t hear much of anything about is the E-EDGE network.

The E-EDGE network is an “evolved” EDGE network that promises faster data transfer and overall performance over the standard EDGE network.  We’ve seen GPRS, EDGE, 3G get implemented in BlackBerry but never heard anything about this new E-EDGE.  Pretty much carriers will have the power to enable this technology, but device makers are still shaky about making the devices until they actually see carriers take a stand on the matter.  RIM strongly believes that E-EDGE’s speed and efficiency will call for a good user experience that won’t saturate network capacity.  Many of you 3G users aren’t really impressed just yet.  Sure we don’t have a comparison chart yet as to what E-EDGE will bring that 3G does not but keep in mind that 3G is not available everywhere around the world and E-EDGE will ensure that every former EDGE user could be on this new network.

pba bowling 2

We’re happy to see Open GL get implemented in games at last.  Back in the BlackBerry Developer Conference, we were teased with games such as Need for Speed on the BlackBerry Storm 2 rockin’ Open GL technology.  Kyle from BlackBerry Cool spotted that PBA Bowling 2 is now available for the BlackBerry Storm 2 so we had to share it with you too given that Open GL is the next exciting aspects for BlackBerry.  The original 9500/9530 is not getting the same technology so make sure you have the BlackBerry Storm 9520/9550 to get the best bang out of your graphics.  For only $2.99, you can have this game on your BlackBerry Storm 2 as a limited time sale til January 4th.  After that, it’ll be bumped back up to $4.99 so make sure you get your game today.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

The most anticipated 1st person shooter series returns with an all-new conflict where you must lead a US Marines squad to victory against a growing terrorist threat in Mexico. Set in modern wartime environments, this thrusts you into the chaos of battle with advanced weaponry and intense combat missions. Demolish enemy strongholds with heavy automatic fire from a helicopter or for more precise kills use steady aim on your sniper rifle. It’s up to you to prevent a full scale war!  For only $9.99, you can have this game on your BlackBerry.

Our experience:

  • Mac Jadalhack – The game is a lot better than the first Call of Duty game.  More weapons have become available and semi-customizable.  The helicopter view in first person mode is awesome.
  • Otoniel Bruno – I’m not big on combat games, but Modern Warfare 2 is pretty fun to play.  Great for passing time.  Don’t expect the same experience you’d have on XBOX.
  • Collin Sorp – It’s another 2D war game.  The game doesn’t last forever but using the sniper rifle and helicopter is a huge improvement here guys.

Compatibility: 8100 Pearl, 8110 Pearl, 8120 Pearl, 8130 Pearl, 8220 Pearl Flip, 8230 Pearl Flip, 8300 Curve, 8310 Curve, 8320 Curve, 8330 Curve, 8330m, 8350i, 8520 Curve, 8530 Curve, 8800, 8820, 8830, 8900 Curve, 9000 Bold, 9500 Storm, 9520 Storm 2, 9530 Storm, 9550 Storm 2, 9630 Tour, 9700 Bold
