Further Thoughts on the BlackBerry Dakota aka Magnum

We already covered the findings of the BlackBerry Dakota aka Magnum prototype today, but I came across more images of the device which made me realize that it is indeed based off of the BlackBerry Bold 9000.  Plus, I never got to give my input on the device so here it goes.  Basically this prototype was created around the same time the BlackBerry Bold 9000 was.  I can’t say I’ve ever seen a BlackBerry take this long to leak out.  Hit the jump for more images.

Look familiar? The BlackBerry Bold 9000 has a very identical side.  Differences? The charger is the new micro-USB rather than the Bold 9000’s mini-USB.  So at least we know that this was after the Bold 9000 and not before.  If you look at the image below, the Bold 9000/9700 battery is still in play with the Dakota along with the same camera lens placement and everything.

The idea of a touch screen with real QWERTY keys is a brilliant idea.  It’s obvious that RIM had no plans on mass producing this model as it really does look thrown together and just too darn identical to the Bold 9000.  It would be quite a shame on RIM if they even thought of releasing the device looking like this.  As many others agree, the Dakota is still in its early stages of testing so don’t expect any official words on it any time soon.
