Over the weekend I received a few emails from our readers asking about the all new Google Mobile App which many of us looked at as a luxury.  To quickly recap what the new app entailed, added was a function of typing in your contacts’ names into the search bar and they would come up as a result with the option to call, email, or SMS within Google Mobile.  Instant reaction? Joy of course because now you can search for something on Google and decide to call someone right from the application.  Days later it occurred to me that folks are more concerned about their contacts being revealed out in the wild to Google like that.

Browsing via BlackBerry? To participate you must be logged on a PC or Mac

We’re curious what the majority of you are using to tweet on your Berry devices.  Yes a majority will be UberTwitter, but we want to see how many are using others including SocialScope which is a closed beta you must apply, Seesmic which is still going through updates to perfection, or even Tweeteev which was promised for quite sometime but hasn’t made faces in awhile.

The Speed theme for BlackBerry has been out for a few months, but we thought it was time we actually took it for a test drive.  It gets hard to pick which platform you want as you can have Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi, and Lexus.  I took the Ferrari for a spin.  The theme looks excellent, the layout is terrific, and the graphics are outstanding.  The home screen has excellent colors and graphics, the gauges on the top work great and provide necessary information: clock, profile, antenna, blue tooth, alarm clock and 2 scroll over gauges which display messages and calendar events below.  A steering wheel with 6 more user-defined icons slides onto the screen from the left when the “ENGINE START” button is actuated.  The menu is well designed with a dark diamond steel background and icons that remind the user of the theme.

We just got the word from the folks over at HandCase that they have just released a beta mobile search engine called Gune.  So day in and out you use Google or other popular search engines such as Bing.  What if you could combine both search results in one?  Gune brings you search results from both Google and Bing in a single screen so you won’t have to go crazy using various search engines.

Here’s just another tip out of the hat for you all.  Some Berry users aren’t fond of scrolling through menus and selecting applications.  Seriously I have a friend with an 8700g who has hidden all his home screen icons (in a Dimension theme) and uses strictly home screen shortcuts.  Of course you don’t have to hide all your icons to use these, but they can be useful, especially if home screen dialing just isn’t your cup of tea.

(Note – you must disable home screen dialing first to use these)

  • “F” – Profiles
  • “N” – BBM
  • “C” – Compose (typically email)
  • “V” – Saved Messages
  • “B” – Browser
  • “M” – Message (Email unless you have them grouped then both)
  • “L” – Calendar
  • “K” – Keylock
  • “D” – Memopad
  • “S” – Search
  • “A” – Address Book
  • “W” – Wap Browser (unless you have Berry Weather then it’s that app)
  • “T” – Tasks
  • “U” – Calculator
  • “O” – Options
  • “P” – Phone

UPDATE: If you have OS 5.0, shortcut “F” will not work as it is now called Sounds not Profiles.  There is no current shortcut for it.  Thanks for the tip Scott!

Looking to have a super organized yet sleek theme on your BlackBerry?  Halcyon might suite you well.  Included in the theme is a bottom dock with 9 locked app icons which include contacts, messages, calendar, tasks, memo, profiles, browser, Facebook, and Twitter (UberTwitter to be specific).  When hovering through each icon, a larger image of the icon appears above.  Scrolling over the Messages and Calendar will enable the Today feature on the home screen.

In addition, an 8-9 customizable menu is available with a weather slot locked and loaded also where you can put in all your favorite top applications. Wallpaper changing isn’t an option since the oversized icons that appear when hovering over apps will “keep your home screen colorful” as Elecite puts it.  We always find ourselves saying this our favorite Elecite theme, but as they keep making them better and better, how could we not.  Halycon is only $6.99 to purchase from Elecite.  OS 5.0 is required to download.  Enjoy.

The BlackBerry Bold 9700 which we all have seen for $199.99 from T-Mobile got a big drop to $129.99.  In just a a two month lifetime of the device, it has dropped about $70.  Next we have the BlackBerry Curve 8520 which was $129.99, and how now dropped down to $79.99.  So what’s the real strategy here?  It looks like T-Mobile is trying to push out more BlackBerry smartphones as it is a new requirement for all customers purchasing one to sign up with the BlackBerry Internet Service.

Asia-Pacific carrier Maxis is getting ready to launch the BlackBerry Bold 9700.  They have just opened up a page where you can sign up to receive a notification when they are available.  Benefits of pre-registration? First off, you’ll be ahead of the game knowing exactly where and when they are available so you won’t have to worry so much about short supply. Secondly, the first 300 people who pre-register will receive a free Jabra Stone Bluetooth headset.  Chances are those headsets are well gone, but you never know..

Here’s really cool video I came across from ZAGG.  As you all know the BlackBerry Bold 9700 has an Invisible Shield out as well. This clip is a short demonstration on what kind of protection you can expect from your ZAGG Invisible Shield.  Do not try these tests at home for obvious reasons.  Aside from these bad boys, we’re going to be doing a review on the competing Case-mate Go Bare skins which were recently introduced at CES 2010.  Which will be better?
