So Skype has made its way to Verizon smartphone users today officially. Many are disappointed with the fact that it isn’t true VoIP (voice over IP) at all. Skype calls use your Verizon account minutes to connect to other users when chatting. It is cool feature to have, but we have apps such as Nimbuzz which do the same. Either way, it’s still convenient to have if you do favor Skype, so if you are a Verizon smartphone owner, hit the link below for more information on Skype for Verizon smartphones.

To avoid sloppy final releases of applications for BlackBerry, RIM has opened up the doors for the BlackBerry Beta Zone. This is the spot where users like you will be able to sign up to test out official BlackBerry applications still under beta. Sign up today while spots are still open. I noticed that a BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.1 beta will be in play soon, so that explains RIM’s teasing about a new BBM coming soon.

Prepaid BlackBerry seems to be the newest trend these days, especially in the United States. We have both Boost Mobile and T-Mobile who have launched prepaid BlackBerry services. Cricket Wireless is next in line now. Their rates are pretty decent, given that they are prepaid, and it has been confirmed that the price will not be anymore than $299 according to Matt from BlackBerry Cool. As a little bio on Cricket, they are a small contract-free carrier serving over four million users at the moment. Here are their current rates:
- $30/month unlimited calling
- +$10/month unlimited text, MMS and voicemail
- $50/month email and GPS services (unsure if the above is included)
- $60/month for data in the form of “mobile video clips and 100 minutes of roaming”

Vlingo has just introduced a new free service called SafeReader, which is an add on to the standard Vlingo application. So let’s say you’re driving and can’t read your messages. Even if you can, you shouldn’t for safety reasons. SafeReader will read them out loud to you so you can pay attention the road and still know what your messages say.
To make it work, all you have to do is press the shortcut key for Vlingo and say “Start SafeReader.” Then all your messages will be delivered to you via audio, allowing you to focus on the road. Use the link below to check out more on Vlingo SafeReader or hit the jump to check out the full press release.

No change log this time, but we wanted to give the heads up any way that Google Voice has just updated to version 0.1.7. How far are we from an official solid 1.0 version? Who knows, but we’ll just have to be spoon fed these small updates at a time for now.

The wait is over. Sort of. Skype didn’t make it all the way across all BlackBerry smartphones, but to Verizon devices to be exact. On their blog, they posted that the application will officially be available tomorrow. This was quite a surprise given that the Skype team had nothing to say about its launch over at Mobile World Congress this year. So stay tuned tomorrow as it officially launches for Verizon Wireless. We hope to see Skype come to other carriers and offer their services on BlackBerry as well. Yes we all know the iPhone has it, but there’s a whole other world out there that isn’t using the that user friendly device.

The leaks just don’t want to stop! Here’s the next BlackBerry Tour leak from the wire. This is OS 5.0.0.591, making it the latest BlackBerry Tour 9630 OS out. Download and install at your own risk as this is not an official release. It’s funny seeing all this Tour leakage so close to the end of the month. Could this mean OS 5.0 is really coming by next week?

This occurred earlier this morning and we’re a bit late in mentioning but here’s BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.66. Yesterday we had a 5.0.0.65 leak out, so don’t expect to see much of anything between yesterday’s and today’s version. Thanks Tim for sending this one in! This is a leak so download and install at your own risk first. I’d suggest a device backup obviously.

Great way to the end the night with one final OS leak. This one goes out to the BlackBerry Storm2 9520, so don’t get too excited if you’re a 9550 owner. This is OS 5.0.0.553, leaked of course so download and install at your own risk. The link won’t be working forever so get it while you can. Thanks to Tim for sending this one in.

We just got the word from Rick the Nathanix is at it again with some BlackBerry Messenger Leakage. We haven’t tried this build yet so download and install at your own risk. This is BlackBerry Messenger 5.0.0.65 and yes it is unofficial. We had some tips from RIM last week that BBM would be going through some nice updates, maybe this is a preview.
Download and install at your own risk folks. Make sure you backup your BBM contacts before doing so. We are in the process of checking this version out and will let you know once we download it.
UPDATE: Downloaded, installed, not seeing any difference yet. If any of you do, drop us a line! Also, downloads may start to fail now, as servers get flooded with download requests. We have posted an alternative download link, but even so you’ll experience “download failed” and some lagging so stay patient and keep trying!
