We got the word from Luis over at BerryReview that there is finally a MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) application for BlackBerry.  Personally I found this a bit comical as I have friends who worship these events and have asked about MMA apps for BlackBerry.  Most of them have UFC web launchers on their homescreens but that’s just not the same!

With the MMA App by Handmark:

  • Get the latest MMA news, interviews, rumors and event info for the UFC, WEC, Strikeforce, Bellator, DREAM, Sengoku and other promotions from MMAjunkie.com, the 2008 and 2009 World Mixed Martial Arts Awards “Best Media Outlet” winner.
  • MMAjunkie.com, an official MMA partner site of Yahoo! Sports, provides your mobile device instant access to all our content, including on-site event reports, the latest MMA business dealings, and industry-leading features on the top fighters and prospects in the sport today. You can also get up-to-the-minute scoring from live shows, rumored fight cards and past MMA event results.

In this app, Handmark has teamed up with MMAJunkie.com to Yes, the MMA application is absolutely free to download and install via Handmark App Store.  Use the link below to download it directly.

Who remembers back in CES when we saw the live demo of Need for Speed Shift 3D on the BlackBerry Storm2?  This was originally introduced when RIM was exemplifying OpenGL graphics on the BlackBerry Storm2.  The game experienced seemed fascinating, and I am super excited to be able to play this now.  It’s available over at the BlackBerry App World for only $9.99.

And I thought I was crazy this whole time.  Bla1ze from CrackBerry talks about his YouTube video playback quality increased over the past few days.  This is something I noticed late last week as I was streaming a YouTube video over 3G and realized the quality wasn’t so blocky and laggy anymore.  So it is possible that quality has generally increased and developers have optimized performance for YouTube video playback via BlackBerry.  Have any of you seen a difference in quality?

From what I’ve seen so far, RIM loves teasing us on their Facebook page.  Not on Twitter, their official blog, or anywhere else, but Facebook to be exact.  So what’s the new word now? Before we had been teased about the Tour 9650 releasing soon, which has now been changed to the Bold 9650 for marketing reasons (in my opinion).  Now we see RIM being all red white and blue about BlackBerry Messenger, urging users to be on the latest version and that there is new stuff coming to it in the next few days and weeks.  What could it be? They definitely got me there.

Today is an exciting day for both BlackBerry users and developers.  RIM has just announced that they are now offering BlackBerry Push Service to all BlackBerry developers.  What does this mean for us?  Pretty much, all these applications where content and updates get sent to your BlackBerry will just work that much better.  Let’s look at an application such as Weather Bug.  Updates for that application are pushed to your BlackBerry instantly.  Instead of it searching for new stuff every few minutes, it gets sent to you as it comes out (just as your email works).

So the services being offered come in two different formats:

  • BlackBerry Push Essentials is a free service that developers can incorporate into their applications and allows them to push content to their customers with unparalleled immediacy
  • BlackBerry Push Plus which has a free tier and paid tiers, provides developers with notification that their push has been delivered. If a content provider needs to get information to someone, they can tell if the target device has received the push.
