BlackBerry OS 6.0 is what we all call it, but RIM is presenting it as BlackBerry 6.  All the rumors appeared to be real, and Mike Lazaridis did announce OS 6.0 moments ago here at WES 2010.  By the look of the preview we’re seeing on it a touch screen interface, making it more of a iPhone competition.  New integrations such as a search bar on the homescreen are available and accessible at anytime.  This was a native feature within iPhone’s latest OS and RIM has finally realized that it is a good idea to have Search as a homescreen integration, than an application to open up and use.

What we wanted to see was an actual hands on experience, but instead we were given an entertainment-based commercial preview for it.  Based on what we saw, the OS does have a lot of new goodies and sub menus that have been created more “user friendly.”  As the demo was based on touch screen, some menu options come up to be larger icons, making it easier for the user to execute commands.

Unfortunately we only had a tease so far and have not had a full hands on experience yet.  Perhaps we’ll find out more throughout the day and see if RIM will give us a better idea on the new OS.

OS 6.0 Quick Facts:

• Crisp, more immersive visuals, including new graphics, animations and transitions
• New WebKit browser; it’s high-fidelity and very efficient, for fast, rich browsing with support for multiple sessions (i.e. tabbed browsing)
• Multi-touch support (e.g. pinch to zoom) while browsing, viewing photos, etc.
• Graphical, context-sensitive menu pop-ups
• Redesigned core apps, plus a new media player UI
• New Home Screen experience; multiple views based on content type (All, Favorites, Downloads, Media, etc.), universal search
• New app for integrating RSS and social networking feeds
