OS Updates »

[19 Apr 2010 | No Comment | ]

It looks like Verizon has just put out an update for OS 5.0.0.591, keeping it as the same OS version but platform has went from .272 to 284 according to Adam over at CrackBerry.  The update may not be huge, but could be fixing small bug related issues, but I guess it was quite urgent to get this out as soon as possible.  There is no desktop install for this yet as it is only OTA for now.  So if you’re on the Verizon network with a BlackBerry Tour 9630, be sure to check out updates available.

That’s for Verizon.  According to BGR, the BlackBerry Bold 9650 will be announced at WES next week officially.  An insider from Verizon Wireless says they will be getting it May 1st while Sprint will get it a shortly after.  How shortly will it be? We have the rumored May 16th launch date for Sprint as of now.  As we all expected, the announcement will be made.  I personally just want to see this Tour, I mean Bold up close and personal.  We’ll have more for you folks as we get closer to WES.

Anything Apple can do, RIM can do better.  Except for touch screen devices (so far).  Perhaps it is time RIM stops competing with Apple’s touch screen feature and starts going after other ones, such as a front face camera.  As you all know by now, Gizmodo has leaked out the first official images of the new iPhone which we will assume is the new 4G model.  The device took quite a face lift and added a few new features.  One big feature is the front face camera.  Why is this such a big deal? It may not be for many, but imagine video chatting with any of your friends on the go at any time.  With that put so simple, we can all agree how cool it would be to have.  There have been rumors in the past of RIM putting out a front face camera device as they said it was possible in an interview sometime last year, but it seems more like a shelved idea than anything else.  We have various new BlackBerry devices on the way including the BlackBerry Bold 9650, Pearl 9100/9105, and the BlackBerry ‘T’ aka Slider aka Talladega.  None of these do show a front face camera which is just going to put RIM even more behind when it comes to the head to head battle with Apple.

Now we’ve seen endless phone lock apps for BlackBerry.  ZoneLock differs itself from all the others by adding some GPS-age to it.  ZoneLock will lock your BlackBerry based on your location.  So what’s that mean?  You’ll be able to keep your BlackBerry lock when you go into your office and unlock when you go home for instance.  Some folks don’t like having password protection all around the clock.  Some prefer it to be active out of the house and inactive when in their homes.

Features:

  • Phone Locks automatically when outside a trusted location
  • Phone Automatically unlocks when in a trusted location
  • Setup one or more trusted locations
  • Setup a trusted location using it’s address
  • Advanced Settings like Location Detection Radius and Location refresh rate

ZoneLock is currently free as a public beta.  There is no word when and if it will go premium, but you can surely grab the free beta by clicking the link below.

Just in from the PocketBerry Store, another new application is in town.  Facebook Contact Sync allows you to download all of your Facebook contacts into your BlackBerry address book.  You’ll be able to download the name, picture and other contact information (depending on what friends’ privacy settings are and if it is available).  Sure you can go one by one through each friend, request a number, and add to your BlackBerry.  Facebook Contact Sync is more for folks who would like to do it all as a big batch.  So if you’re looking to get all your Facebook contacts at one time rather than one by one, then this app is good for you.  It is currently $3.99 at the PocketBerry Store.  Use the link below to check it out.

A few weeks ago, we had our first look on the all new BlackBerry Pearl 9105 which rocks a T9 keypad.  Today, in the id-BlackBerry Google Group archive, Ronen from BerryReview spotted more images of it, giving us a closer look at the keyboard itself.  Cosmetically it looks great, but once again, who’s up for T9 on a BlackBerry?  It seems a bit backwards for RIM, but there are many folks out there still using T9 and are comfortable with it.  Therefore devices such as the Pearl 9105 may be appealing.  On the other image, you’ll see the new typing options including compound words, context learning, and auto word learning.  As you all know we have WES coming up in a week, where we expect RIM to give us a better picture with confirmed details on this new Pearl family which so far is expected to have a SureType, QWERTY, and T9 model.

A video from Fox News indicated that BlackBerry will be getting Adobe Flash during the second half of 2010.  Pretty exciting isn’t it? This video was based on the Adobe CEO, discussing on matters with Apple and how everything pretty much went downhill with the rejection of Flash on their iPhone.  So a mention was made about BlackBerry getting Adobe Flash which is pretty darn exciting to hear.

With that being said, we are excited to see further demonstrations with Adobe Flash on BlackBerry at WES next week.

Carrier News »

So what’s the latest leaked news lately? Pretty much it all has to do with this BlackBerry Bold 9650 and when it will finally launch.  This looks like it’s some leaked but confirmed news as this Sprint document mentioning the Bold 9650′s launch date has been released out in the open.  Pricing plans appear to be: $449.99, $299.99, and $199.99.  We’re assuming the $199.99 is going to be the base price for the phone with a 2 year contract.  As the legend does not appear to be available we’ll go with the assumption for now.  So the document says May 16th is the launch date.  We don’t seem too far off by our “educated guesses” from the past saying May would be the month.  That was for Verizon though, and we still have faith that both carriers will release it side by side.
