MyFord Touch makes it easy to use your BlackBerry while driving
by Mac Jadalhack
Last week we were invited to the Ford plant in New York City to check out what Ford is doing in its new vehicles with its famous MyFord Touch system. MyFord Touch is a very unique interface, designed for Ford vehicles only (obviously) with a ton of options. We’re going to focus on how it goes well with your BlackBerry. Don’t get me wrong, it goes well with all other mobiles as well, but since we do go through everything Berry, we liked to focus our overview on how well the BlackBerry went with the MyFord Touch system.
Like any other wireless connection, you must turn on Bluetooth, search for nearby devices and connect. Upon entering the vehicle and approaching the screen to push the “search for Bluetooth devices” option, everything came simple. A number code comes up on the screen and you’ll just have to enter that number into your BlackBerry, like you would when connecting to other devices. Once connected, you’ll see everything start to merge together as one.

The touch screen interface includes a phonebook, which I assumed was just a place to save important contacts in manually so you could click them to call while on the road. Wrong. My whole phonebook synced to right into the MyFord Touch system along with every single contact’s avatar.
So what now? I have all my contacts in the phonebook of this vehicle. You can always click a contact to call right there on the spot, but why not speak it out loud? Of course we’re used to automated voice systems where it’ll only pick up regular names (Jim, Bob, John, etc) so I decided to go and try dialing friends and coworkers of mine with not so very American names. Impressively, those all went through as you guessed.
The neatest aspect behind the voice system is that it’s quick and easy. Once upon a time, we’d have to say “phone” then “call a contact” and then say the contact’s name a few time’s before the kind robot lady picks it up. With the MyFord Touch system, everything is simplified. On the new system, you’ll be able to say “Call John Doe” immediately after pushing the voice button on the steering wheel.

How about text messaging? It’s safe to assume that BlackBerry users like to message back and forth quite frequently. This isn’t a huge solution but might come to be a convenient for some. As seen in the picture about, you’ll be able to reply back to text messages received while driving! We’re just kidding. You cannot be moving while typing, but let’s say you are parked and have some down time, you can feel free to do type away. I prefer just using my physical BlackBerry, but this is a nice option to have along with everything else being offered.
Sorry for the stock images but that’s only for now. We will be putting up some hands on pictures up soon enough when we get more time with the vehicle. But for now, we’ll keep you going with this light glimpse on what the MyFord Touch can offer for your BlackBerry.
