Hands On: Application Management on BlackBerry 6 via Torch 9800

The Application Management on BlackBerry 6 is awesome.  Finally RIM has added a live CPU monitor allowing you to trigger down what could be slowing your device down when experiencing issues.  It allows you to check out stats for that live moment, a day before, or for the full week.  But that’s not all.  You can swipe back and forth between different fields including CPU, Memory, Usage, Application Storage, and Applications.  You can change the time frame for all five of these and it’s just interesting to see even if you’re not having memory or lag issues.

So how is this menu accessed? Hit Options, then go to Device and there you will see Application Management.  Alternative? While you’re on the home screen, type in the all-in-one search “application management” and it will come up.  You don’t even have to complete the words since it will come up as you are typing.  In the search results you’ll see Options (1) come up.  Just click that and you’re ready to go.

Here’s a quick walkthrough the five different tabs in Application Management:

Applications:

Here you’ll see all of your applications installed listed.  You can change view by seeing all applications, required applications, or optional.  It will pretty much narrow down what is and isn’t needed on your BlackBerry so you can perhaps remove what you don’t use for the sake of saving some memory.

CPU:

This is my favorite here.  It shows the CPU usage of your BlackBerry right there on the spot.  Applications are listed from highest memory usage to lowest.  For me it seems like Home Screen stays on top and fluctuates between 2% and 8%.  All other applications are listed as well as you can see in the image.  If you spot a third party or add-on application taking up a lot of memory, you can click it easily and delete it if you’d like.

Usage:

This one I find quite entertaining.  Usage screen shows what you are using the most in terms of hours, minutes, and seconds.  So why’s it useful? Sometimes you can’t make decisions on your own, and seeing applications you hardly ever use might make it easier for you to delete.  I’ve had many friends rockin’ endless applications they never even use.  Seeing statistics like these cranks a light bulb over the head and gets the ball rolling with your memory management.

Memory:

The Memory tab shows you all your applications and how much memory they are taking at the moment.  You can also view this by today’s stats, yesterday’s, or the week’s.

Application Storage:

Lastly Application Storage shows you how much space your applications are taking on your built-in memory.  Unlike the others ones where it shows live RAM memory being used, this shows the actual “hard disk” space taken from applications.

You can sum this all up and say it’s one pretty useful application to have.  It comes standard on BlackBerry 6, and we are currently using it on  the Torch.  It works both landscape and portrait so hold as you want to use Application Management.
