The doors have finally opened up now for developers.  BlackBerry App World now officially is accepting applications for the BlackBerry PlayBook.  Over the last month, we’ve seen some interesting applications, one of which was a fantasy football application which was quite fascinating to see working really smooth.  We also saw a developer create a full browser for the PlayBook emulator in a short period of time which also something remarkable.  In the press release after the jump, you’ll find details about developers who submit applications before the PlayBook launch (that get accepted) who will then get a free PlayBook as a result.  Hit the jump for the full press release from RIM

In this video, we see RIM’s David Neale talking to Marc Saltzman from Rogers about the BlackBerry PlayBook.  We saw a bit of the demo this weekend but this appears the full 17 minute clip of the full PlayBook demo along with open ended discussion on the tablet.  So again, many of you have seen the demo portion, but there’s still a lot talk and gossip on the PlayBook throughout the video.  Enjoy it!

So RIM has gone ahead and sent out friendly emails out to BlackBerry developers letting them know about a new BlackBerry App World update rolling through.  With App World v2.1, developers will be able to “upload digital goods for Blackberry Payment Service (in-app purchases)” as well as “register and manage digital goods in the BlackBerry App World Vender Portal.”

So it’s been a slow day in BlackBerry news today, but an OS leak has surfaced.  I’m not sure how many of you out there are currently rockin’ the BlackBerry Style 9670, but a new OS has just leaked for it.  As you all know, the out of the box OS came along with a lot of bugs which probably drove many of you to install other versions.  I just gave this one a go and it’s definitely running a lot smoother than the 6.0.0.248 my Sprint Style came with.  Of course download and install at your own risk since this is leaked and not official.

Elecite recently launched a new theme called Wave, which in my opinion works really well on the Torch.  The theme is very much different as the main user interface doesn’t have icons.  It depends more or so on this round circle as seen above with locked icons in it.  There’s seven icons you can customize, while it has twenty one locked ones.  Speed-wise, I haven’t experienced any lag on my BlackBerry Torch 9800, although I don’t have much installed on there, and have only fondled around with the theme for a few hours.  Click the link below to head over to Elecite for Wave and other popular themes.

It’s a very famous mishap to have duplicate contacts on your mobile address book.  Sometimes this happens by user error, or as a result of syncing different address books into your BlackBerry allowing contacts to be duplicated sometimes.  I came across this application called Contacts Cleaner that helps you merge duplicate contacts with single clicks.  Here’s how it works:

  • 1) Scan the Contacts database, looking for duplicate contacts.
  • 2) Near-duplicates are displayed for manual merging.
  • 3) Select attributes like first name, last name & email id on basis of which you want to merge contacts.

Contacts Cleaner is on sale for only 99 cents at the PocketBerry Store where it’s normally $2.99.  If you need assistance getting your contacts organized without having duplicates, you should definitely check it out.

Last week, we ran a post on BlackBerry front face cameras as to whether or not we will be seeing it implemented in the next devices soon.  So this time we decided to run a poll to see what you all think about that scenerio.  We know that the BlackBerry PlayBook has a front face camera and does provide video chatting capability.  Also keep in mind that it is running QNX, so we can only assume that RIM would have front face cameras on smartphones running QNX.  Cast your votes!

So we haven’t seen BlackBerry 6 OS launch for the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and BlackBerry Curve 9330 just yet.  Verizon and Sprint will of course be lined up to get these builds officially, but it’s a matter of time I guess until we see it.  In the meantime, RIM has put up some simulators for both of the devices on their site for you all to drool over for now.

It’s the weekend, and we usually don’t post up the Deal of the Day or much of anything, but I did come across a promo for QuickLaunch.  As you know, QuickLaunch is a popular BlackBerry app, and it’s also today’s Deal of the Day special.  You won’t save much (only a buck), but it’s still cheaper than its full price.  Click the link below to check out QuickLaunch for BlackBerry.
