Usually ringtones are created on computers due to the whole process of uploading an audio clip and then having to cut it to 30 seconds or so. There’s a new application in town that allows you to create ringtones right on your BlackBerry. Why bother going through websites and computer applications when you can make ringtones on your BlackBerry directly? The process is real easy:
- Choose any song from your music collection to use as a ringtone
- Zoom in and choose your favorite part of the song to use as the tone
- Make and use tones directly from your BlackBerry
- Pick MP3 or M4A (non-DRM) tracks for your tones
- Preview tones you’re making – even hear how they’ll loop
- Use your tones for ringers, custom contact ringtones and alert tones
And that’s all there is to it. I personally don’t ringtone much and keep my ringer quite stock. But I know tons of people are still loving ringtones and switch them up a lot. It’s 99 cents to purchase a special promotion, but will soon bump back up to its $2.99 price tag. Hit the link below for more info and screenshots or to purchase it.

Smartphones running Android and iOS currently have “swipe to unlock” or “slide to unlock” features when locked. For a while now, BlackBerry has depended strictly on password protection or a lock button located on the top of the device. There are third party apps such as PatternLock where you customize a pattern to draw out and the BlackBerry then unlocks. There’s also BerrySlider that gives you a replica of what the swiping to unlock is like on the iPhone, but it’s still not the same and annoying to be an add-on application. Let’s face it – apps running in the background can tend to slow your BlackBerry down, especially with the low speed processors we have going now.

The lock screen may appear to be boring to many as it just displays the time and a message you may have customized. There’s a new application called bLOC which allows you to customize your lock screen with widgets including weather, calendar, clock, quote of the day, and gold prices. As a launch promotion, you can save 33% on bLOC and grab a copy for only $1.99.

As you know the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and BlackBerry Style 9670 both come with only one convenience key on the right hand side. By default it’s set to launch the camera, as it has been standard on all other BlackBerry models to have on the right as well. It’s been an aggravation for me for a while as I loved having Task Switcher on my left hand side or QuickLaunch. Now I have adapted to just having QuickLaunch as my right side convenience button which launches my camera and other favorite applications and contacts.
So here’s a quick poll to see how you guys make out with just having one convenience key and what you use that one for. Cast your votes in the poll, drop us a line in the comments, or tweet us.

We’ve been teased for way too long on BlackBerry Protect launching. I am actually still surprised that it’s December and we still don’t have the service open for the public yet. Back at DEVCON this year, I spoke to a few other bloggers and developers who had said they received invitations to test out the service. Cool, so we’ll all be seeing it in a couple months tops – still nothing yet. Ronen from BerryReview has spotted a frequently asked questions page for BlackBerry Protect, and last week we saw the service get advertised in the BlackBerry Connection Newsletter. So how soon is the launch date going to be now? Check out the BlackBerry Protect FAQ here.

It’s not always a good idea to locally store all your SMS messages forever on your BlackBerry as it will eat up memory down the road. Surely we have the latest BlackBerry models with 256MB and 512MB but it’s good to save all that free for apps and such. KeepMySms is a new application that automatically sends all your text messages to your email inbox. Features include:
- Tracks and sends the Incoming and Outgoing SMS messages of your BlackBerry
- Autostart – KeepMySms starts on its own when the device is restarted.
- KeepMySms always runs in the background without interfering with any of your other activities.
- Easy Email Relay – Forward all events to your inbox
- No Recurring monthly cost, just a one time fee.
- Absolutely safe – The call and sms data is absolutely safe and is directly sent to you as soon as it is received. We do not maintain any copy of the data on our server.
- You can change your mail id for logs as and when you want
- Can help in detecting if your device is lost/stolen/misused.
So if you’re one who likes to archive messages, then you should check out KeepMySms since it’s a pretty simple utility that gets it done for you. KeepMySms is $4.99 on sale at the PocketBerry Store as the normal price is $6.99.

The average holidays theme gives you semi-altered icons along with some fancy backgrounds. Then you’re expected to pay some sort of premium for them. Hedone Design, which has always been known for having one of the best free and premium themes in town has launched the Xmas theme, which is Christmas based just in time for the holiday season.
The icons aren’t stock at all and are all in gold with the image of the apps engraved sort of into each icon. Between the icons and the backgrounds, Xmas theme is brilliant and rich with color. I have tried it on my Torch and love it for the season – check it out for yourselves and let us know how it goes on your BlackBerry.
