Skype is coming for the BlackBerry PlayBook – Video chat support please!

So Skype is obviously coming out for the BlackBerry PlayBook.  During CES 2011, there was a screenshot during one of RIM’s presentations showing BlackBerry App World on the PlayBook really quickly.  What I didn’t pay much attention to, but Ronen from BerryReview pointed out, is that Skype is listed as one of the applications.

It’s a big question as to whether or not RIM will have its own video chatting service, perhaps integrated within BlackBerry Messenger on the tablet, or solely depend on third party applications for it.  Given that Skype is a very popular video chatting application, we’re excited to see how well it works on the PlayBook.  So far now, Skype is available on mobile devices such as the iPhone 4 but there is no video chat supported.  Two thumbs up for the PlayBook, assuming video is supported (best hopes that it does).

Skype hasn’t announced anything on this and neither has RIM.  We could just be seeing a chat and voice version of Skype without video call capability but that would really be a shame.  Time will tell as we get closer to an official launch date of the tablet.
