Apps, Reviews »

Browsing through the PocketBerry Store I came across an app that really caught my attention. It’s called Lock BlackBerry Messenger by Empower. These guys definitely got it right when they came up with this app – especially since I’m all about my privacy.
The idea is really simple. It password protects your BBM without having to password protect your phone. You can still make calls, send emails or play games on your BlackBerry. I think we all know “that guy” (coworker, boss, friend, kid, etc) who gets a hold of your BlackBerry and wants to go through your BBM list. For all you victims, this is a perfect app for you.

Here’s another video from RIM showing how some tattoo artists in Indonesia use BlackBerry, BBM in particular. They share designs over BBM and even have a BBM group where they share all sorts of ideas and pictures with one another. RIM has been putting out a lot of these videos on how people in different professions all over the world use their BlackBerry. The clip is not in English so watch close for subtitles.
General News »

A few days ago, I learned from a news broadcast on BBC that Twitter services were blocked in Egypt due to the rioting and protests which have been occurring there lately. Ronen from BerryReview got word from someone in Egypt that the whole country’s BlackBerry services have been blocked as well. Mobinil, Vodafone, and Etisalat are three carriers confirmed in the region where BlackBerry services are no longer active as of now. It looks like all this is pretty fresh as the blockage started at around 11am this morning.
In best hopes when the protests and riots are over, the citizens will gain BlackBerry access again in addition to Twitter.

Application Updates, Premium Applications »

The very popular application Fixmo Tools which in my opinion is a gathering of great utilities for BlackBerry has just updated to version 2.0. You can read all about its features here but below is the full change log:
- UI Improvements across all the applications
- Wifi File Transfer – Transfer files to and from a PC or Mac directly to your BlackBerry using only Wifi and your computers browser (former Chocolate Chunk App)
- Wifi Media Backup – Seamlessly back-up the photos, videos and voice-notes on your Blackberry to your Windows PC (former Chocolate Chunk App)
- Remote Print – Print emails, photos, contacts, memos, office documents and more directly from your BlackBerry to your printer over WiFi (or through BES) (former Chocolate Chunk App)
- RemindmeLater - Schedule a reminder in your calendar for a meeting, email, SMS and more
- Screenshot – Capture a simple screenshot from any application from within the application menu. The captured screenshot is stored within the device’s pictures folder
- Memo – Create a list to-do items that are posted directly on top of the background of your BlackBerry display
We were properly introduced to Fixmo Tools back at WES 2010 where we got to meet the guys behind the scene and get a real hands on experience from it. In celebrating version 2.0, Fixmo Tools is now only $9.99 for a limited time as it’s usually $14.99. In the bundle, you get 17 applications in one with Fixmo Tools and I’m certain many of you can find good use to some of these.

I am big on taking screen shots of my BlackBerry for many reasons – from showing off themes and wallpapers, showing other BlackBerry users how to do certain task, or just for fun. It has come very handy many times. Recently I have seen that the app “Capture it” by the TechMogul is no longer available officially through their site. It seems as if the site is suspended. I have seen a few other forums mention it as well as ask what screen capture applications other BlackBerry users are using. So here’s a full list of apps:
- Screen Muncher (Free Edition) by Motek >>
- Screen Muncher Premium (99 cents) >>
- Screen Capture by Pepper.pk (99 cents) >>
- SnapScreen by Virtual Views ($1.99) >>
- Alisha Screenshot App ($1.99) >>
- Screenshot Free >>
- Screenshot Premium (99 cents) >>
- BBSnapIt (99 cents) >>
- ZonaSnap (Free) >>
If you still want Capture It, the folks over at KomBB have it hosted. Click here to download it over the air.

RIM has been putting out applications in its commercials a lot lately. We saw Pageonce Personal Assistant and then Urbanspoon. Now we see one of my favorite applications make its appearance – Poynt. Poynt is an excellent GPS application used for directions, weather, and a local directory of everything that’s around you. So check out this quick 30 second clip on Poynt with the BlackBerry Torch and how these photographers use it.
