We already saw this version go official with Three UK, but figured we’d let you know about Wind Mobile putting it out for the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the BlackBerry Curve 3G 9300.  The update is available in Desktop Manager for those on Wind currently and want to update.

The theme bDroidX claims itself to be the most accurate Android theme available for BlackBerry, and I have to say it’s pretty damn close.  It’s based off of the Motorola DROID X, with the icons, overall layout, and background image.  Features include:

  • Custom Google Android Icons
  • Custom Meters and Notification Icons
  • Wallpaper friendly Homescreen – DroidX wallpaper default
  • Up to 8 customizable icons on Homescreen (varies on device)
  • Hidden today area on Homescreen to preview your phone’s events (excluding 83xx device)
  • Customized DROID EYE loading icon
  • One of a kind – very accurate – DroidX Theme for BlackBerry

TAT, or The Astonishing Tribe, has posted up on their site that they’re looking to hire people to join the team.  This is the official note:

With us becoming a part of Research in Motion (RIM), there are lots of interesting things ahead! We are looking for more talented co-workers to strengthen our office in Malmö.

So the team is looking to expand, and I’m pretty certain it has to do with BlackBerry, especially since RIM has officially acquired them a few months back.  TAT is very well known for creating incredible mobile user interfaces, and since RIM has taken over, they have been working on the UI within the BlackBerry PlayBook.

I guess this is a cool utility if you want to keep all the applications you’ve downloaded all in one place to make it easier after OS installs and such.  It also comes handy if you download an application somewhere over the air, and the link could go bad sometime in the future.  That way, you’ll always have the files on hand.  OTA Downloader is free to download, by the same makers of NuX Downloader.

Browsing via BlackBerry? Click here to view video

What we haven’t seen so far is how the HDMI-out connection works on the PlayBook.  Tablets such as the Apple iPad allow you to connect to television sets via cable or through AirPlay which is included in Apple TV.  Neither one of these methods allow you to view the tablet live, as it only supports certain media.  With the BlackBerry PlayBook, you connect an HDMI wire to it and connect to any television or projector, and a live screenshot of you PlayBook will appear.  As you can see in this clip, it works smooth, and the resolution looks great.

Earlier today, RIM and Electronic Arts officially announced Need for Speed Undercover and Tetris to be officially available and preloaded on the BlackBerry PlayBook right from launch date.  As far as other platforms go, both of these games are premium and have to be purchased through Android’s Market, or Apple’s App Store.  So Lucas over at N4BB got his hands on some screenshots of both games.  Tetris isn’t such a big deal to me here, but Need for Speed Undercover looks great.  I wish we could see a demo video just to get an idea of how smooth the game operates.  More screenshots after the jump!

As expected, there will be many accessories for the BlackBerry PlayBook once it launches.  These accessories will be just as wide range as the iPad and other tablets have.  Leather wallet covers, silicon covers, stands, desktop chargers, and more.  RIM is launching quite a few different cases as well.  One cool one I noticed on the BlackBerry.com is a leather envelope-style case and the PlayBook fits in perfectly.

A few weeks ago, we touched up a bit on the possibility of Android applications running on the BlackBerry PlayBook and future BlackBerry smartphones running the new QNX OS.  An article over at Businessweek indicates that RIM is working on software to support Android’s 130,000 some apps and is scheduled to be available “in the second half.”  So there’s no real promise here that it’ll ship out with that support, but to know that the feature is coming is a plus.  Being able to take advantage of all great BlackBerry features and get the great games Android OS currently has available seems to be catchy and could work.

As we touched upon earlier, the article says that RIM is not going along with Dalvik (Google’s engine that runs Android apps) and is instead going with their own now.  I guess for legal reasons they decided this, but I’m curious to see how RIM’s own developed software will work with Android applications and their updates.

On a side note, I look forward to having Angry Birds on my future QNX enabled BlackBerry smartphone.

For those who forgot, RIM had removed Kik Messenger from BlackBerry App World.  Later we learned that RIM had filed a claim against Kik for patent infringement.  We haven’t heard anything on the matter up until now where David Lam has posted up on his blog that Kik has responded back to RIM’s actions.

RIM and Electronic Arts announced the availability of Need for Speed Undercover and Tetris for the BlackBerry PlayBook at launch date.  Now we’ve seen Need for Speed on BlackBerry smartphones before, which weren’t really impressive with the lack of graphics, but it’s a whole new ball game now on the BlackBerry PlayBook.  After seeing the Quake 3 demo on the PlayBook, I expect Need for Speed to look just as good as it does on the iPad (if not better).  As for Tetris, it’s not really graphic demanding anyway so I’m not concerned on how well it’ll look on the tablet.  Continue reading for the full press release from RIM and Electronic Arts.
