The city of Boston has announced development of an application which detects potholes without the driver having to mark spots on the map.  As soon as I heard about it, I assumed it would be some geotagging application where users could mark on the map where they have encountered potholes.  The application will require an accelerometer and GPS.  So far Android and iOS support has been confirmed but other mobiles will be supported as well.  So current BlackBerry devices which already have accelerometers and GPS, and future devices having those features equipped, it could come to us too.

BerryGoodThemes has just launched a new theme called Skylark which works with all OS 6 devices.  The icons are very cartoon-like which is pretty cool and they still look good next to other stock apps such as Twitter and Facebook.  Usually themes with uniform icons ruin your homescreen since there’s applications which don’t follow the same style.  Any way, you can grab Skylark for only $1.99 as a special promotion sale saving you 50% instantly.  We’re also giving away 15 free copies here – first come, first serve basis.  Use coupon code “15PB” at the checkout screen to get Skylark absolutely free!

According to the application description, NuX Downloader Hacker Edition allows you to download large files through BIS.  A cool feature I noticed is that you can pause and resume the download anytime if you don’t feel like going through the battery kill of downloading on the go. It’s free to download and available at the PocketBerry Store.

While browsing through applications at the PocketBerry Store, I came across an app called Photo Translator by SHAPE Services, the makers of IM Plus. If you recall, we let you know about the free open beta put out for Photo Translator a few months back.  So now it’s official.  Instead of using the traditional translators where you have to type in word for word (and risk spelling the word wrong getting an incorrect translation) you just snap a picture and let photo translator do the rest.

Jackpot! Three UK has officially launched out OS 6.0.0.448 for four of their devices: the BlackBerry Torch 9800, BlackBerry Curve 9300, BlackBerry Bold 9700, and BlackBerry Bold 9780.  Lucas from N4BB spotted that the Torch got the update, then I look further at the other models they had and noticed that three other devices got it as well.  We’ve seen 6.0.0.448 come out as a leak for the Torch, and then moments later a 6.0.0.450 leak came out which seemed better on battery life in my opinion (I could be wrong).  Any way, click the link below to get on your official OS.  If you’re currently using the Bold 9700, this should be a pretty stable build to go with as far as official OS versions go.

Here’s a music video RIM put up on their YouTube channel featuring lots of BlackBerry action.  Usually when we see BlackBerry used in commercials or in videos, sometimes the logos are cropped out for legal reasons of course.  Here we clearly see the BlackBerry Torch used and lots of BBM action.  The song is “What Happened To Us” by Jessica Mauboy featuring Jay Sean.  It’s not bad at all, but it’s nice seeing BlackBerry all over it.

Earlier it was rumored that Staples might be carrying the BlackBerry PlayBook in their retail stores since their internal employee calendar shows BlackBerry Tablet training.  Now it looks like there’s no mistake about it, but Office Depot will be carrying the PlayBook as well.  All along many of us figured the PlayBook would only be available at cellular carrier stores, but retail stores are getting in on it too as we’ve seen with Staples and now Office Depot.  This is the first time we see a price tag though.  You can grab the 16GB WiFi model for $499.99 which matches the Apple iPad price.  Also we see that it says the tablet will be available on “week 17″ which could be either March or April.

RIM has just put up some more BlackBerry commercials up on their YouTube channel.  Once again, these feature the one and only BlackBerry Torch, which as you know has most of the spotlight when it comes to RIM’s product line.  In these clips, you’ll see dance artists, chefs, and surfers talk about their stories on how they use BlackBerry.  I think RIM should launch these kind of commercials for the BlackBerry PlayBook – soon.  Hit the jump to check out the clips.

Anytime RIM puts out a new OS, or in this case a whole new product with unique design, theme developers get right to work, creating replicas of the new OS or product, but adding unique touches to it.  In this case, we’re talking about the BlackBerry PlayBook.  Since the device has been announced, we’ve been seeing lots of buzz on themes being developed.  So here’s a quick roundup of some PlayBook themes you can download for your BlackBerry.  You won’t get an identical look to QNX OS on the PlayBook, but some of these themes are pretty close.
