RIM & Mobile Carriers fight over who controls NFC
by Mac Jadalhack
Carriers want NFC data stored via sim card. RIM wants the NFC data stored securely on the device. It’s basically a battle over who is going to control all the revenue, applications, and mobile payments as a whole.
Carriers including Rogers, AT&T, and T-Mobile claim they would like to encrypt all the NFC credentials into the sim card itself, giving them control over all the mobile payments. The advantage for you here is that sim cards can be swapped obviously, so you can switch devices easily to keep your mobile payments going. The disadvantage? I guess if you lose your phone, anyone can swipe your sim card and use your NFC mobile payments themselves, that is of course if you haven’t called your carrier to deactivate the sim yet.
RIM’s strategy is to have all the NFC credentials built into the BlackBerry itself. Password protect your device and if it’s lost of stolen do a full wipe to have your data all gone, and hopefully deactivate any NFC profiles you have on there. We already know that Bank of America is testing out NFC with BlackBerry smartphones at the moment, so we already see that RIM has gone ahead in making deals with banks.
