Carrier News »

How convenient is that? So today is the official launch for the BlackBerry PlayBook, and of course you need BlackBerry Bridge to have BlackBerry features on the tablet. All carriers were supported for Bridge EXCEPT AT&T, as we let you know last night. PhoneScoop got confirmation that AT&T is still testing out Bridge, so that’s sort of a good sign that it could be releasing. I’m just wondering if they’re planning to charge extra for the Bridge.

We’ve been seeing Poynt for the BlackBerry PlayBook here and there since CES 2011 and we finally get our hands on with it as it appeared in App World just yesterday (for the PlayBook that is). With the PlayBook just being released, we’ve been going through the AppWorld left and right looking for apps we are used to seeing on OS 6 now operating on the PlayBook. One super app we all love has just his just been made available to us, Poynt. Poynt is a local search tool which fully integrates with your BlackBerry without ever having to leave the application all while having ability to use GPS and WiFi to expedite the result return process. Poynt allows you to connect with local businesses and retails all on the go. If you have point on your BlackBerry, then you already know Poynt’s very simple and easy to use interface.

Along with the official launch of the BlackBerry PlayBook, RIM has put out WebWorks SDK 2.0 and the final version of BlackBerry Tablet OS SDK for Adobe AIR. Developers can now update the beta build they currently have, and hopefully create better applications now.

I don’t know how many of you are still using the BlackBerry Storm 2, and the 9520 at that, but there is a new OS update for it rolled out by Vodafone DE. This is OS 5.0.0.1077, for the 9520 model only, NOT the 9550. We’re currently in OS 6.0, and getting into OS 6.1 and 7 in the near future, but OS 5.0 is still great and works well on the Storm 2 in my opinion. Click the link below to download it directly from BlackBerry.

The wait is over! We’ve been waiting for the BlackBerry PlayBook to launch since late September where it was announced at DEVCON 2010 by Mike Lazaridis during a keynote. As of today, the BlackBerry PlayBook will be available at many different retail channels as promised. Did you pre-order yours? Are you walking in the store to pick one up? Let us know!

UPDATE: According to word spreading, all carriers are supported for BlackBerry Bridge except AT&T. What a bummer.
It looks like BlackBerry Bridge is beginning to roll out officially. I have been trying it nonstop since midnight and still no luck. I guess it’s going to be one of those slow releases where it could take all day to reach every user. Let’s hope not! If you’ve successfully downloaded BlackBerry Bridge, let us know! We’re hoping you have a PlayBook to go along with it, or will be picking one up in the morning.

It’s not secret that the BlackBerry PlayBook has been picked on from early stage reviews surfacing on the web. The bigger jabs at it go towards its dependence on a BlackBerry smartphone to get native email, calendar, and contacts on the tablet. Aside from all of that, we saw Mike Lazaridis end an interview with BBC early and so Joy of Tech put out this comic mixing it all up a bit. We’re all fans of BlackBerry and their latest PlayBook tablet, so this is all just in fun.

TweeKL is the first Twitter client I spotted available for the BlackBerry PlayBook up until now. Today is launch day, so more applications will surface in App World, hopefully a wider variety of Twitter clients. TweeKL is plain and simple to use. There’s no functionality to it other than browsing your own tweets, friends timeline, or tweeting. Retweeting, profile viewing, and all that other good stuff are all vacant from the app.

It makes me wonder if this is the out of box OS that RIM is having pushed to all of you purchasing the BlackBerry PlayBook tomorrow. It would be silly if we saw something new between now and then, but you never know. I did one OS update out of the box, and this is the second one I do since Thursday. So for you who are currently holding down the PlayBook before launch, you can update through Desktop Manager, or over the air by checking for updates in the options menu. Enjoy!
By the way, so far I notice a “Power Off” icon in the bottom of the applications list. That was much needed, especially since the physical power button is a hassle and a half to push.
