We received our BlackBerry PlayBook review units last week, and have been messing around with its features since.  The PlayBook came preloaded with a Gmail link as well as Hotmail and Yahoo alike. Every user has his/her preference and here we are given the option. So to start off with Gmail, first thing you need to know is it is an icon on the home screen which essentially redirects you to the browser. Rather than Gmail opening up in a format you are familiar with from a computer browser, it has been optimized for the PlayBook, more or so as HTML 5 (as seen on the iPhone) to open up in such a fashion that is convenient and user friendly.

As the BlackBerry PlayBook makes it way close to launch, many are skeptical about features it lacks, which includes having a native email client that does not require BlackBerry Bridge.  That has been cleared out sort of after an interview spotted this weekend.  In an interview with WSJ, RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie talks BlackBerry PlayBook and explains that they will have a “standalone, non-web, non-paired email client” in the next 60 days.

At first we had OS 6.0.0.526 leaked out for the BlackBerry Torch 9800, and now surprisingly AT&T has picked it up officially.  There doesn’t seem to be a direct download link available for it just yet, but I’m sure it will surface within the next day or so.  To get the update, connect your BlackBerry Torch 9800 to BlackBerry Desktop Manager, then you should be prompted for the update.  If you guys spot the direct download link available, drop us a line!

It looks like Uber50 is the first theme designed for UberSocial for BlackBerry.  According to what we’re seeing here, 50 Cent is responsible for making (designing rather) the theme. “Uber50 has the coolest icons and unique features possible for Twitter.  There’s nothing better,” 50 Cent suggests about his own theme.  Features in Uber50 include:

  • Custom icons and colors straight from the mind of 50 Cent
  • Superfast access to the G-unit Twitterlist list and media portal to make sure you’re the first of your friends to get the latest G-Unit news and videos.
  • Exclusive artwork as background within UberSocial

I’m sure most of you have Gmail accounts setup already on your BlackBerrys where you don’t need to go to your browser and fetch for email.  Even so, this was interesting to see.  I noticed last night on my BlackBerry PlayBook that Gmail was loading up in HTML 5, looking very similar to how it appears on iOS.  I went to my BlackBerry Torch 9800 web browser to see if it did come up in HTML 5 there as well and it looks like it did.  I’m not exactly sure when this happened, but CB reports it as a new feature that has just surfaced.  So for all of you BlackBerry users with webkit browsers, head over to gmail.com from your mobile web browser to check it out.
