OS Updates »

This update did not necessarily come out over the air this moment, but by now everyone should have received this update pushed to their PlayBooks. It’s been a crazy few days with the PlayBook OS updates seeing so many come out at such a short period of time. I’m glad RIM isn’t keeping their eyes closed to bug issues and such for the tablet, but also I’m getting worried at the rapid rate they keep releasing at. Any way, the latest is OS 1.0.1.1710, but that can always change as it’s still early in the day and other folks might just see newer OS builds surface. If you’ve received this update and installed it, let us know of any changes you see.

Rumors keep circulating for BlackBerry World and what devices RIM has to announce during the event. At one point in time we had the idea that several devices would surface including the BlackBerry Touch (Monza/Monaco), Bold Touch, and Curve Touch. The latest rumor from BGR says that there has been some last minute changes and RIM is going to announce the BlackBerry Bold Touch only at the event, which is quite disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, the Bold Touch is a great device we all look forward to seeing, but it was definitely more exciting to see a whole new product line launch with the three devices.

Another cool app that I came across is Drums for BlackBerry PlayBook. This app features a full drum kit, adjustable volume and sustain (to change the length of the sound), visual feedback (to see what drum or cymbals you are hitting) as well as many others.
I have purchased this app and I have had lots of fun making up my on drum beats and pretending to be a rock star. So if you are like me and like making noise or if you know what you’re doing check out Drums for BlackBerry PlayBook in BlackBerry AppWorld for .99$ and while you’re at it check out some of the other apps by Jared Costell such as Piano for BlackBerry Playbook, Xylophone for BlackBerry Playbook or Instruments ( a combination of the 3 apps for 2.99$)

BlackBerry App World for mobiles already has Test Center, where applications that are beta or in testing get placed for the general public to test out until final release. Now Test Center has been added to the BlackBerry PlayBook as well, so you’ll be able to get the latest and greatest applications before they hit official releases, if the developers decide to place their apps there that is.

It’s not like the BlackBerry PlayBook is impossible to find nowadays with all the retail channels it’s available at. Rogers Wireless in Canada now carries the PlayBook as well officially, so next time you’re in the store for your BlackBerry upgrade, you can get a PlayBook side order to go along with it. Pricing remains to be the same: $499 for 16GB, $599 for 32GB, and $699 for 64GB. So if you’re looking to grab one from Rogers, head over to any of their retail stores. I can’t seem to find a purchase link online so you’ll have to make the physical commute.

Looks like in BlackBerry Beta Zone they’ve updated BlackBerry News Feeds app to 1.0.1.5. Looks more or less maintenance Here’s what the Beta Zone Team said about BlackBerry News Feeds:
- Issue where users may have No Current Subscriptions (not even default) and user is unable to add any feeds
So if you are part of Beta Zone head on over for the update. If you are a member head over to blackberry.com/beta and sign up now to take part in Beta Zone.

As sad and frustrating it is, BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac OS does NOT supported the BlackBerry PlayBook. I honestly would have thought that by launch time we would see both PC and Mac clients support the tablet. Personally I’m a Mac user and it’s annoying that I have to wait for over the air updates everytime a new one is surfaced. I should be able to connect to my computer like everyone else and run the update. That would be too easy. RIM confirms that an update is coming soon, but there’s no official launch date set. I figure since we don’t have BBM access on the PlayBook yet, we’ll probably get OSX support 30 days or so after that. Any one else hurting from this?

Yesterday Kal had an interesting experience updating to OS 1.0.1.1705. From what I understood, he had restarted his PlayBook while it was connected to Desktop Manager, and in the middle of the boot up, a new update surfaced available for download. Lucas over at N4BB seems to have gone through the same scenerio and has posted up a nice step by step to do it yourself:
- Backup your PlayBook – this is essential as the new OS install will wipe your device
- Click Device > Update in Desktop Manager (it will most likely tell you there isn’t a new OS)
- With your PlayBook still connected to Desktop Manager via USB, restart your PlayBook
- You may have to try the same steps above twice before it kicks Desktop Manager into gear
- A new window should pop-up, click the ‘Update’ button in the middle
