This one came out in the last BlackBerry Connection Newsletter, so we’re a bit late in mentioning it here. RIM put out two new stock themes for BlackBerry users to download. They’re both spring themes where one gets a tree in the background with some sunlight on its icons and the other gets BlackBerry logo on the background spiced up with a new style along with a unique glow to application icons. You can download them both free at BlackBerry App World!

The concept is quite simple. All IMpics really does is take your image, upload it to a server, and then generates a link you can send to your friends to view a photo. It doesn’t necessarily enable the user to send files over mobile IM applications, but instead sends out a link (like tiny.url) to the person you’re talking to with the image displayed in it. It’s a pretty cool and easy concept and you don’t necessarily have to be using an instant messaging application for this. Get creative on your own and think of all the good examples where it may come handy.

A new game from Aztux Ltd has surfaced called Cut the Cable. The game is pretty much based on the hit iOS game called Cut the Rope. Cut the Rope comes from the same makers of Angry Birds, so you know it’s really addictive. Any way, Cut the Cable is good alternative for the BlackBerry, of course weaker in graphics, but gives you the same game play. The objective in each level is to get the candy into the mouth of the frog, but that’s not all. You’ll want to catch the stars as you make your way down to the frog’s mouth to get a better rating score for the level.

I won’t really go so in depth on this topic, but the bottom line is that RIM does not have any plan for BlackBerry Messenger to work on any other platforms. It feels real good to be able to put the rumors behind us now, as it’s been circulating for months from iPhone and Android users that they would be getting BBM in the near future. Luis from BerryReview puts out the whole explanation why it’s not in RIM’s best interest or future roadmap to bring BBM to other devices besides the BlackBerry.

Some of you are probably laughing thinking that the tip is so obvious. I felt the same way too until I attended BlackBerry World. I could not believe how many BlackBerry PlayBooks around me on the same network were open for wifi sharing and I was very much able to open up their media with no problem or prompts. Of course I did so just to see if it would work not to snoop – seriously.
So here’s how to set a password for all of you out there who attended last week’s BlackBerry World keynote unprotected (and everyone else who has been oblivious to security).
- Open the Options menu on the BlackBerry PlayBook
- Select the Storage & Sharing option
- When enabling File Sharing and Wi-Fi Sharing, turn “Password Protect” on as well
- You will be prompted to set a password and there you have it
In best hopes I have no luck picking up other open BlackBerry PlayBooks at BlackBerry World 2012!

The Visitor made its way high in the most popular free apps for BlackBerry PlayBook. I wondered what it was for a while and finally got a chance to play it this weekend. The Visitor isn’t your average game at all though. It’s a point and click game where you navigate an alien out of a river into a house to kill and eat animals and humans. The alien gets bigger as it eats others. Throughout the game, you have to use objects around you to get your alien to make way without being caught.
Overall it’s a fun game to play but definitely is a bit gory (I had no problem handling the blood but some of you may). As mentioned in our post title, The Visitor is really short, but then again it’s free so no complaints. It definitely gets me excited to see what the developers have planned for future apps and games.

I’ve seen this done natively when users would take the 3MB cap that RIM has on its browser downloader. Now there’s an application that makes it all easier. Ever want to download torrents on your BlackBerry smartphone? Maybe there’s a music album or movie you’d like to get from a torrent site. Now you can on your BlackBerry with Torrent Downloader.
I haven’t tried this application myself, hence the stock screenshot above from an Android device it looks like. As a special promotion, you can grab Torrent Downloader for only $3.99 as it’s usually $4.99 to buy. Let us know about your experience if you decide to grab a copy.

I know I did. After playing Need for Speed for a few hours, I found that I couldn’t open any other applications. Even Need for Speed gave me a low memory error saying it needed more to continue game play. Pretty crazy considering that the game was all I had open which forced me to reset. But wait, the “Power Off” application won’t open either! That’s where I got the “Error code: 12″ message as seen above.

UPDATE: BlackBerry App World seems to be up and running again now on both BlackBerry smartphones and PlayBook!
It looks like BlackBerry App World has been down for the last few hours. I tried downloading some BlackBerry PlayBook applications earlier this morning but I kept getting an error message. Then I tried on my BlackBerry Torch and the same thing occurred. I couldn’t even get passed the BlackBerry ID login. The error reads “BlackBerry App World is having trouble connecting to the BlackBerry App World server. Verify your network connections and try again.” Any one else experiencing the same thing?
