It’s essential.  We were introduced to Universal Search for BlackBerry when OS 6.0 launched, so the feature cannot be stripped away from us at this point.  In the beginning of my PlayBook usage, I didn’t feel any need for it.  Here I am three months into using it, and my applications list has built up.  It would nice to hit a search button and type in what you need and BOOM – it’s there.  But Universal Search has more to it.  For supported applications, you can search through them and find music, pictures, etc.  So I’m hoping OS 1.0.7 gets Universal Search but that sounds like something we’ll see in 2.0 if anything.

It’s been quiet with UberSocial for BlackBerry lately.  For a little while we saw a chain of updates, more or so due to Twitter shutting them down, then a relaunch with some bugs.  We even saw 50 Cent get his own version of UberSocial,  open to the public to download.  Now a new update has surfaced, bringing it to version 1.20.  Included in this update is bug fixes and a new “inner circle” feature that lets you create separate timelines for users you’d like on their own specific list.  We have the same function already on SocialScope, so it’s nice seeing other BlackBerry Twitter clients expand to that.

The only goodies we get out of leaked OS builds of devices that haven’t launched yet is updates software included in them.  They often tend to work with BlackBerry devices we have with earlier OS versions.  So here we see some IM clients ripped out of OS 7.0.0.176, which leaked out yesterday.  Use the links below to grab a copy.

BerryPopup is an application, but more of a message preview utility for your BlackBerry.  When receiving messages on your phone including SMS and email, you’re able to preview them as soon as they arrive rather than going to the folder and opening it up from there.  So no matter what application you’re in, you’ll see BerryPopup show you the previewed messages.  The cooler part is that you can reply forward, mark as read, or delete right from the preview window as well.  Why bother previewing it and then opening it later delete when you can right on the spot?

Features:

  • Preview incoming e-mails/alerts
  • Open inbox, reply, forward, mark as read and delete e-mails right from the popup
  • Open inbox, reply and forward SMS right from the popup
  • Support for CrackBerry and Bellshare forum notifications (reformats forum notificiation e-mails for easier legibility)
  • Option to automatically delete forum notification mails
  • Disable popups until backlight dims or for a certain time right from the popup
  • Customize order of messages (Oldest first, Newest first)
  • Only show popups for messages from contacts you have in your phonebook

T-Mobile has of course been in the loop with all opponents who are against the T-Mobile/AT&T merger.  So after all was said and done, they decided to release a little statement showing exactly what they have to say on the matter.

BELLEVUE, Wash – (BUSINESS WIRE) – Today, Tom Sugrue, T-Mobile Senior Vice President of Government Affairs, issued the following statement:

The opponents of the AT&T-T-Mobile merger have had their final say as part of the FCC’s formal pleading cycle and, not surprisingly, they have failed to offer any credible arguments to support their view that the Commission should deny the transaction.  What is surprising, however, is their repeated head-in-the-sand insistence that no spectrum crisis exists.  As part of their application, AT&T and T-Mobile provided a compelling showing of their need for more spectrum to continue to provide quality service to customers and roll out new technologies in the future.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 continues to get OS leaks on the web, I’m hoping that by the time we see the next leak, the device would have already launched – that might be too much to ask for with the delays we currently face.  For those who have the Bold 9900 at hand, you can download OS 7.0.0.176, leaked, as there is no real “official” build yet to our knowledge.

A cool application we got to see at BlackBerry World was Wikitude.  The application promises “augmented reality” and of course works primarily outdoors where GPS signal is strong.  There’s a lot to the application so it’s best you watch the video and see how cool it is.  It will come preloaded on all BlackBerry Bold 9900 smartphones.

Dropbox for BlackBerry got a bump up to version 1.0.39.34, bringing nothing but bug fixes probably.  We’re used to seeing long change logs from Dropbox but not this time unfortunately.  We do know that Dropbox had some internal issues the other day where accounts were accessible for a few hours.  As CrackBerry suggests, maybe this update is in relation to that but there is no real way to know for sure.  Either way, the updates up in App World.  Click the link below to download.
