BlackBerry Avatar Builder launched late last week on BlackBerry App World quietly, but spread out fast once the word was spread and everyone got their hands on with it. It was an odd event to see the application removed completely out of App World as no one was able to locate it.  It has now returned with a new update as version 1.0.1.  Could there be any changes in this one? Maybe.  Perhaps there was some big issue with the application (or something legal) but we have nothing on that to confirm it.  Either way it’s back up in BlackBerry App World so feel free to download it today if you haven’t already.  Have you built your BBM avatar? Share it with us on Twitter.

Currently we have BlackBerry Messenger 6 already released in BlackBerry Beta Zone for users to try out.  There’s not too many new features in app, but the biggest part is its BBM Social Platform capability.  The folks over at BBH put up a download link for a new leaked build of BBM.  This version is 6.0.0.88 and only works with OS builds 6.0.0.570 and up.  Click the link below to download over the air.

The BlackBerry PlayBook not only provides the best web browsing experience, but can act a great pranking machine with friends.  Blue Screen of Death for PlayBook generates several different error messages that some of you Windows users may be acquainted with.  It calls for more of a screensaver if you ask me, but I did show a few friends the blue screen error on the PlayBook and their jaws did drop for a second.  Blue Screen of Death is free to download from BlackBerry App World.

Remember that open beta for Fixmo Web Messenger a little over a month ago? It looks like the app is now official and out of beta.  For those who missed out on this one, Fixmo Web Messenger brings your BlackBerry Messenger access to your computer so you can talk to your friends at ease with a full sized keyboard and screen.  It’s not a standalone BlackBerry Messenger account either though.  Think of it more like BlackBerry Bridge where you’re just using your existing BBM account on another platform.  Features of Web Messenger include:

  • BlackBerry® Messenger from any web browser on PC or Mac (flash support required)
  • Secured communications between the web browser and the BlackBerry® device to ensure your communications remain safe
  • Access the Fixmo Web application through either: the Fixmo website, the Fixmo Web Messenger iGoogle gadget or the Fixmo Web Messenger Facebook application

Fixmo Web Messenger is only $2.99 in the PocketBerry Store as a special promotion price.  After the sale is over it will be bumped up to $4.99.

It only makes sense that the BlackBerry PlayBook should have QR code scanning capabilities since BlackBerry smartphones do and QR codes are just getting more and more popular overall.  I spotted a free application in App World today called QR Scanner which simply scans QR codes and opens up what they have.  Let’s say a QR code is pointed to a web URL, you will get prompted to open the site up in your browser.  You can grab it free at App World.

We’ve seen ringtone applications in the past that allow you to create ringtones right on your BlackBerry.  JaredCo just released Ringtone Composer which is absolutely free to download and lets you do the same thing other premium ringtone apps do.  Here’s how to make a ringtone using Ringtone Composer:

  • Simply choose any MP3 tune in your BlackBerry® music archives click your Menu button, select “Create Ringg Tone” and choose the sounds you want to hear.  (** If you don’t see ‘Create Ring Tone’ menu item please restart your BlackBerry® **)
  • Create the start points and the length for the ringtone of your favorite concerto with two clicks.
  • Once you’ve created your glam-rock ringtone, save it with a couple of clicks so each time you connect, your favorite rocker announces the call.
  • Get tired of one ringtone? Ringtone Composer simplifies the swap out of one clip for another as your musical mood shifts from light jazz to hip hop.
  • There’s no re-configuring required. Just download and access your favorite music using Ringtone Composer from JaredCo.
  • And last, but not least – the RINGTONE COMPOSER IS FREE. Totally free.
  • Save and swap tunes daily, hourly if you want to play DJ. Ringtone Composer de-hassle-izes creating ringtones from your music collection. No sweat and your ringtones sound cool.

In a recent interview between BGR and Verizon’s CMO, it’s been confirmed that they will be getting three new BlackBerry devices this year.  One we know is the BlackBerry Bold 9900 as it comes in a CDMA flavor.  Let’s face it, the BlackBerry Bold 9650 really doesn’t cut it.  There’s other CDMA devices out there including the new Torch 2 9850 and the Touch 9860.

Thanks ecivon for the tip!

It looks like during the earnings call today that RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis stated that the 4G BlackBerry PlayBook would be delayed until this fall.  If you recall, the 4G BlackBerry PlayBook was to exclusively be carried at Sprint this month, but they ended up getting WiFi models instead.  There were definitely folks out there waiting for a 4G version to launch, but seeing a further delay could be discouraging.  Maybe it’s time to just settle for a WiFi or wait the little extra stretch.

The BlackBerry Bold 9900 launch has just become way too confusing.  There were rumors floating around about a launch delay, and then it was confirmed in the RIM earnings call today.  Now we’re seeing Three UK confirming the BlackBerry Bold 9900 coming soon in August.  Of course Canadian releases don’t have to match the United States, but when we here there’s a delay we expect it across the board. For now this is all we have and we have yet to see a carrier come out and change their launch date for the Bold 9900.
