When the BlackBerry PlayBook and BlackBerry Bridge launched, it was a very exciting. After being exposed to the Bridge and it’s features one thing that I enjoyed was getting my notifications (emails, and bbm) on my PlayBook.; however, I was a little disappointed that I had no way to access text messages. So I still had to take out my BlackBerry Smartphone to text. After wanting some way to text on my PlayBook, I stumbled across SMS Bridge developed by Ming Huang.

As always I was very hesitant about the purchase since there weren’t many reviews, and I wasn’t sure how it would work. I decided to give it a try, at first there were some issues. After contacting Ming SMS Bridge version 12.0.0 was launched, and it is working very smoothly. It is even compatible with OS 7 devices.

SMS Bridge essentially takes an SMS sent to your BlackBerry and sends it to your PlayBook as an email, and when you reply to the message it sends it to the other person as a text message. So they have no clue that you sent it from your PlayBook.

Here is an explanation from Ming Huang

“In the same way as BlackBerry® Bridge to be downloaded and run in BlackBerry® phone, SMS Bridge too must be downloaded and run in BlackBerry® phone. SMS Bridge simply makes a copy of the received SMS into an email then inserts it into BlackBerry® mail inbox. Automatically a new mail will pop up on BlackBerry® PlayBook™ with the SMS content, assuming your BlackBerry® PlayBook™ is connected to your BlackBerry® phone via BlackBerry® Bridge.

By replying to the (SMS) email on BlackBerry® PlayBook™, you reply to the SMS. In fact your response (SMS)  is sent out by SMS Bridge (this application). SMS bridge not only converts incoming SMS into email for BlackBerry® PlayBook™, it also converts an email from the bridged BlackBerry® PlayBook™, adressed to e.g. 1234567890@bb.sms, into an outbound SMS for the phone “1234567890″.”

The application is very simple, once downloaded, connected your device to the bridge and then open SMS Bridge, and select “Go into background” The SMS Bridge is now activated. To deactive go back to SMS Bridge and select  “Kill The App and Exit”

You can pick up this app here for an affordable price of $3.99, but it’s up to you if you think that receiving your text on your PlayBook is very important.
