Originally you could pick up all OS 5.0 ringtones from the mobile BlackBerry website. Now RIM has gone further and made it available in BlackBerry App World a couple of days ago. A lot of people don’t navigate to the mobile BlackBerry website for anything and have relied strictly on App World for all downloads. Smart move from RIM to make it available there, and it’s free!

Chess- Battle of the Elements just released for the BlackBerry PlayBook from Polarbit. We’ve seen chess games go live for the BlackBerry tablet, but there really wasn’t anything too impressive to see. The graphics are just amazing in this game as you don’t have to deal with 2D chess gameplay which gets way too boring. It’s $1.99 to buy at BlackBerry App World, not too bad of a price for a premium 3D game.

OS 7.0.0.440 is available for three devices from AT&T- the BlackBerry Torch 9810, Torch 9860, and Bold 9900. I’ve tried the Torch 9810 9860 OS so far, and it’s a lot more stable than what we’ve seen out of the box and I have definitely seen battery life increases here as well. Click the link below to grab a copy for any of the three.
UPDATE: Oops. We screwed up. Tip we received stated Torch 9810 was one of the ones updated but we’re to blame for not validating. Sorry folks!

It’s over. The Gmail BlackBerry application is getting discontinued on November 22nd officially. The reason behind it? Google says it is focusing on enhancing its mobile Gmail site as that’s where they see their future involvement with BlackBerry smartphones. There’s a bunch of Google apps that have been left out of later BlackBerry devices with OS 7, and it’s no surprise to see the company start by announcing this.

Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores. We will no longer adapt Flash Player for mobile devices to new browser, OS version or device configurations. Some of our source code licensees may opt to continue working on and releasing their own implementations. We will continue to support the current Android and PlayBook configurations with critical bug fixes and security updates.
So for future planning, Adobe is looking to focus and invest more into HTML5. It’s interesting to see this happen as Steve Jobs never believed in Flash and always had his focus around HTML5. Now as far as Flash goes, what’s to come of the BBX smartphones? Will they have Flash like the PlayBook or be left out?

Of course we expected to see delays on this one. The BlackBerry PlayBook took way too long as is to launch, and we’ve seen smartphone delays over the years. An analyst is claiming that BBX smartphones from RIM are due in second quarter of 2012 when RIM promised first quarter originally. It’s obviously not a great time for RIM to be delayed with future products or have any mistakes at all for a while with their current situation of many subscribers jumping ship to other platforms.
Already we see BlackBerry PlayBook OS 2.0 get delayed and furthermore announced to be lacking native BlackBerry Messenger. My guess is that we’ll be seeing BBX smartphones announced at BlackBerry World next year. I’d like to be more optimistic but I just don’t see PlayBook OS 2.0 launching then having BBX devices shortly after.

There’s no reason the BlackBerry Torch 9800 and BlackBerry Torch 9810 are both available at AT&T for $49.99. The original 9800 went on sale for $199.99 when it first launched, then the 9810 received a $49.99 price tag from day one. Of course over time the 9800 dropped in price as it aged.. all the way until it reached $49.99. Once the new Torch came to town, the 9800 should of dropped in price! But as you can see, both devices carry the same price tag which could call for lots of confusion when shopping for your next or even first BlackBerry smartphone. Let’s just hope these AT&T store reps are smart enough to distinguish the two for customers.

Idle Tracker is a free application for the BlackBerry PlayBook that allows you to track packages for Fedex, UPS, USPS, and DHL. The app is pretty straight forward as you have the option to add a package and then a refresh button to keep seeing the latest status on where the package is. Download Idle Tracker free at BlackBerry App World.

Ok so you’re not going to exactly convince your friends to switch over from Words With Friends to another alternative to it. But some friends might like you enough that they will download a game in order to play online against you in it. Fightin’ Words is an alternative to Words With Friends and is compatible with both BlackBerry and Android smartphones.
The idea of the game is pretty much identical as Scrabble and Words With Friends. Best part is it’s free to download from BlackBerry App World- give it a go!
