cwade playbook root tweet

Apple and Android operating systems are those known to be “rooted” or “jailbroken” which gives you further access to the OS than usual.  BlackBerry has never taken part in rooting of any kind really until now.  A mobile developer Chris Wade who is responsible for iEmu and other mobile hacks/roots claims he has rooted the BlackBerry PlayBook and will be releasing an installer for it soon.  The root will work for current and 2.0 beta operating systems too.  If all comes out true, I’m pretty sure RIM isn’t too happy about it and will be getting to work on a new update pronto preventing these things from happening again.

Last week I experienced quite a few 102 errors on my BlackBerry Bold 9930.  Over the last month, I was hearing about it occurring to many other Bold users around me and was seriously expecting it to hit my at any time.  Well it did, and yeah it’s a pain in the ass.  The 102 error requires you to reboot your BlackBerry and reload the OS to use again.  Users have been able to get by this with various tricks (share them with us if you’re one of those people!).

Have any of you received the horrific 102 error? Did it happen to you at the worst time possible? Share your stories with us!

NFC is included in various BlackBerry smartphones, but we still have no actual use for it just yet.   Research In Motion and the carrier Telefonica are currently testing NFC (Near Field Communication) in Spain.  The carrier has been looking into testing NFC and chose the BlackBerry for it due to its high security.  Below is the full press release.

WATERLOO, ONTARIO and MADRID, SPAIN–(Marketwire – Nov. 23, 2011) -

Telefónica Digital and Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM)(TSX:RIM) today announced a pilot program of the Telefónica Wallet for BlackBerry® smartphones.

In collaboration with local banks and retailers, Telefónica will roll out the Telefónica Wallet for BlackBerry to 350 employees at its headquarters in Distrito Telefónica, Spain. Those taking part in the trial will be able to make payments in a simple, easy, safe and convenient way by simply tapping their NFC-enabled BlackBerry smartphone against a reader. Employees that are part of the NFC pilot project will also be able use their BlackBerry smartphone (in lieu of a security card) to gain physical access to the Telefónica headquarters office.

BlackBerry Protect just got an update to version 1.1.1.50 today.  The update is for BlackBerry 7 OS devices only!  Unfortunately there is no change log- all we see is the message that reads “BlackBerry Protect version 1.1.1.50 is an update for BlackBerry 7 devices only.” If you spot anything new here, let us know!  It looks like the new version is not listed in BlackBerry App World web store but if you head over to App World from your BlackBerry and refresh, you should see it roll out.
