touch cross platform

PingChat! has been around for quite a bit, but went through some changes today including a whole new application name- Touch.  The community apparently holds 13 million users which isn’t a small audience at all.  If you already have PingChat!, you’ll be prompted to “upgrade” to the newer version which is Touch.  It’s very much like BlackBerry Messenger with the same style chat and the ability to see when users are typing and when a message has been read.  Sounds familiar to what we currently have.  Any way, you can download the application directly by pointing your BlackBerry browser to http://www.touch.com/blackberry.

itunes sync

Copying your music to your BlackBerry PlayBook can’t get any easier.  iTunes Sync is an awesome application available in BlackBerry App World for the PlayBook which does just that.  Of course you should be careful using the application if you’re rocking the 16GB model as it may not hold all the music you need along with apps and other media you currently have on there.  Click the link below for more info on iTunes Sync or to purchase a copy.  It’s $2.99 to buy, and based on the ratings and reviews, it’s going well for users.

Research In Motion is obviously aware of this “Dingleberry” root that’s roaming around the web now available for download.  It was bound to happen and the rooters even warned before hand that they would be exploiting the BlackBerry PlayBook.  So here’s RIM’s official statement on the matter:

“RIM is aware of reports that a security researcher has released a tool designed to allow BlackBerry PlayBook users to jailbreak their tablet. RIM is following its standard security response process to investigate the functionality and impact of this tool and if needed, RIM will develop, test, and release a software update that is designed to minimize the potential adverse impact to our customers.”

With that said, we’ll be seeing an OS update for the tablet which will “help” eliminate exploiting roots.  There’s no estimated time for the update yet, but keep your eyes open in Software Updates on the PlayBook.

The free outage applications continue.  Keep in mind all applications are free until the end of this month.  Over the weekend we see N.O.V.A. and Texas Hold’en Poker 2 free in the “Thank You Gift” category of BlackBerry App World. Now for the downside, both games are not compatible with OS 7.  A bummer for some, but many will still get to enjoy it on their OS 6 or older devices.  Click the links below to download or search for them in BlackBerry App World.

tmo carrieriq document

Last week CarrierIQ was definitely among one of the bigger trending topics when it comes to the mobile industry.  CarrierIQ was claimed to be existent in all mobile devices where carriers would be able to snoop messages sent received for their customers.  BlackBerry smartphones were accused to have CarrierIQ software, but RIM suggested that they do not install any of that on their smartphones.

TmoNews published a document today showing that CarrierIQ software is installed on the BlackBerry Curve 9360, Bold 9900, and Torch 9810.  But T-Mobile claims it is not snooping on what you’re doing.  This is what’s mentioned in the document:

  • Battery performance: If a customer’s device battery appears not to be holding a charge, T-Mobile can determine if the issue is the battery, charger or device
  • Dropped calls: If a customer attempts to make a call and the call fails, T-Mobile can determine whether the cause was the handset or the network
  • Application failures: If a customer uses an application, preinstalled or downloaded from a third-party marketplace, and the app fails, T-Mobile will be able to troubleshoot that app failure, which may be perceived by the customer to be the device freezing/crashing

Does the info drive you away from T-Mobile or not concern you at all as a customer?

We’ve had eBay for BlackBerry v2.0 in BlackBerry Beta Zone for a few months now, and the testing is finally over.  RIM announced today on Inside BlackBerry that the final release of version 2.0 is officially available in BlackBerry App World.  There’s a bunch of new features and enhancements in this version including a new user interface and BlackBerry Messenger integration.  Originally the eBay app only let you search and shop for items, but now we’re able to list items and upload full photos and descriptions all within the application. Sweet!
