Who remembers DJ Diplo in “Love What You Do” BlackBerry Torch 9800 commercial? Well that same clip has been changed as it’s not a BlackBerry Bold 9900 instead! Everything in the clip remains the same, except he says “Bold” instead of “Torch” and you see the Bold 9900 device zoomed in hands rather than the Torch 9800. It’s a great commercial either way, and RIM took a nice easy route on changing what the device is here.

Ever since the leak of OS 7.1 for the BlackBerry Bold 9900, I’ve been enjoying the Mobile Hotspot feature built into it. It’s worked great with the BlackBerry PlayBook or even my laptop. However, it looks like AT&T has caught on to the OS and blocked the service for those trying to go freebie. Now you get a pop up message that reads “To use this feature, contact your wireless service provider and subscribe to a Mobile Hotspot data plan.” So that blows for anyone trying to make use of their data plan without facing extra charges.
Perhaps this means that OS 7.1 is launching officially soon for AT&T BlackBerry smartphones? We’ll see! Anyone else on other carrier getting this prompted message? I’ve tried on T-Mobile, Verizon and Sprint and didn’t have any issues using the hot spot feature on OS 7.1. Let us know in the comments!

So here it is. The BlackBerry Porsche P’9981 comes with a customized Porsche Design theme by default. Of course themes aren’t officially available for the BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930, but some devs have made magic happen. If you wanted to get the Porsche Design theme, now’s the time to grab it as it has been extracted out and made available for all your Bold 9900 and 9930 owners. Click the link below to download.

This only works for OS 7.0, no 7.1 supported yet!

Last night it was discovered that BBM Canada was attempting to bring Research In Motion to court over the “BBM” trademark which the company is using. Today RIM responds to the accusations with this official statement:
“Since its launch in July 2005, BlackBerry Messenger has become a tremendously popular social networking service. In 2010, RIM started to formally adopt the BBM acronym, which had, at that point, already been organically coined and widely used by BlackBerry Messenger customers as a natural abbreviation of the BlackBerry Messenger name. The services associated with RIM’s BBM offering clearly do not overlap with BBM Canada’s services and the two marks are therefore eligible to co-exist under Canadian trademark law. The two companies are in different industries and have never been competitors in any area. We believe that BBM Canada is attempting to obtain trademark protection for the BBM acronym that is well beyond the narrow range of the services it provides and well beyond the scope of rights afforded by Canadian trademark law. RIM has therefore asked the Court to dismiss the application and award costs to RIM. Further, for clarity, RIM’s application to register BBM as a trademark with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) is pending and we are confident that a registration will eventually issue. The inference by BBM Canada that CIPO has refused RIM’s BBM trademark application is quite frankly very misleading.”
So there it is! RIM has a pending application to register “BBM” as a trademark at the moment. Nice to see RIM put their foot down on this one, rather than eat the bullet and have to change a name of their product as we saw with BlackBerry 10.

Crush the Zombies is a game that released back in October for BlackBerry smartphones and has gained its popularity as it is an addictive game to play. It looks like the developers have launched a free version of the game as well which may be limited on levels. Either way, you can pick up the premium or free version fro BlackBerry App World.

To be honest, RIM’s focus should be elsewhere but it’s not like they’d listen at this point even if they knew. It looks like the company is working on parental control features to come to surface for BlackBerry smartphones. This will be included in a future OS update, maybe an application add-on. Here’s their official statement:
“RIM is committed to child protection and is an active member of the Internet Watch Foundation (IWF).
Access to IWF URLs are blocked on BlackBerry in the UK and this is being put in place in the international markets in which BlackBerry is available.
In addition, as a provider to mobile operators, RIM fully supports its operator partners around the world in meeting obligations and commitments in this important area.
Content filtering support is available to operators from RIM that enables the operator to perform the content filtering function for BlackBerry smartphones.

A couple months ago Spotify for BlackBerry went into beta and was available for select BlackBerry smartphones, GSM only. Now the app and service is officially launched, but still no CDMA love. Compatible devices include the Bold 9780, Bold 9700, Curve 9300, Bold 9000, Curve 8520. Also, no Torch 9800 support either.
With a bunch of OS 7 devices here, let’s hope that the company plans on expanding compatibility. If you’re not a happy camper at least you have BBM Music.

The BlackBerry Porsche P’9981 was officially announced a few months back, but we haven’t seen in available anywhere yet. It looks like Harrods in the United Kingdom will be carrying the new Porsche BlackBerry with a hefty price tag of £1,275. It’s expected to launch by the end of this month which could mean anytime now. Perhaps a delay?
