I think it’s very important to point out what works well on the BlackBerry PlayBook, without the need for an application for it.  With that said, I’m a huge Amazon fan, and when I found out that they opened up their own cloud services I was excited. 5GB of storage for FREE and if you purchase an album you get upgraded to 20GB for a year. So I started uploading music right away. Unfortunately, I couldn’t access my cloud from my BlackBerry only from a computer or from my Android device.

Since we got our hands on the Playbook here at PocketBerry last week, we’ve been trying to keep you informed and up to date with the unit as well as applications for it. One app that we’ve taken likening to which came preloaded with the device is the Slacker Radio app. As most of you know, Slacker Radio is one of the most popular streaming audio applications for blackberry and now that it is available for the PlayBook, I can see it being a regularly used app.

We’ve been seeing Poynt for the BlackBerry PlayBook here and there since CES 2011 and we finally get our hands on with it as it appeared in App World just yesterday (for the PlayBook that is).  With the PlayBook just being released, we’ve been going through the AppWorld left and right looking for apps we are used to seeing on OS 6 now operating on the PlayBook. One super app we all love has just his just been made available to us, Poynt. Poynt is a local search tool which fully integrates with your BlackBerry without ever having to leave the application all while having ability to use GPS and WiFi to expedite the result return process. Poynt allows you to connect with local businesses and retails all on the go. If you have point on your BlackBerry, then you already know Poynt’s very simple and easy to use interface.

We received our BlackBerry PlayBook review units last week, and have been messing around with its features since.  The PlayBook came preloaded with a Gmail link as well as Hotmail and Yahoo alike. Every user has his/her preference and here we are given the option. So to start off with Gmail, first thing you need to know is it is an icon on the home screen which essentially redirects you to the browser. Rather than Gmail opening up in a format you are familiar with from a computer browser, it has been optimized for the PlayBook, more or so as HTML 5 (as seen on the iPhone) to open up in such a fashion that is convenient and user friendly.

We’re close to approaching the launch date of the BlackBerry PlayBook, but reviews have already started surfacing all over the web.  We rounded up a few we could find, but in the event you spot one we don’t have listed, let us know.  Also, based on some of the reviews, there was an OS update available for the tablet, just as we saw the other night at the PlayBook event.  Any way, here’s some reviews:

We let you know about Nic Nac Noe coming to BlackBerry smartphones over a month ago.  The cool part about it is that the game was originally for the BlackBerry PlayBook, as we saw video demos which featured the game, then later came out to mobiles.  Nic Nac Noe is based off of Tic Tac Toe, a game that has been around forever using O’s and X’s to line three in a grid with 9 spots.  The difference here is you have these 3D ninjas instead of the X’s and O’s, making the game a bit more interesting.

While browsing through applications at the PocketBerry Store, I came across an app called Photo Translator by SHAPE Services, the makers of IM Plus. If you recall, we let you know about the free open beta put out for Photo Translator a few months back.  So now it’s official.  Instead of using the traditional translators where you have to type in word for word (and risk spelling the word wrong getting an incorrect translation) you just snap a picture and let photo translator do the rest.

Browsing through the PocketBerry Store I came across an app that really caught my attention. It’s called Lock BlackBerry Messenger by Empower. These guys definitely got it right when they came up with this app – especially since I’m all about my privacy.

The idea is really simple. It password protects your BBM without having to password protect your phone. You can still make calls, send emails or play games on your BlackBerry. I think we all know “that guy” (coworker, boss, friend, kid, etc) who gets a hold of your BlackBerry and wants to go through your BBM list. For all you victims, this is a perfect app for you.

Fortunatus is an application at the PocketBerry Store with the following description:

When you start Fortunatus you will see a picture of a beautiful diamond. You can show this diamond to your friends to show you are rich. It is also possible to chat with your fellow wealthy colleagues whom also bought the program. The chat function shows real-time how many other wealthy people are using the chat function at that moment.

We’ve seen this done in the Apple App Store before, and even at the PocketBerry Store as well.  What’s crazy is that another one has surfaced here called Fortunatus, but at only half the cost of what we’ve seen a while ago.  This application gives you a bit more than the diamond photo.

So I was looking through the PocketBerry Store and I came across an app called Tweeker by Motek.  Motek is well known for a bunch of other apps including Code Muncher, Screen Muncher, and Color ID. Tweeker is built to be the quickest way to tweet; and it does what it says. After inserting your user name and password, you’ll be able to tweet as soon as the app launches. You don’t see time lines and replies, and have to press buttons to update your status. The best part is i set it as one of my convenience key and it makes it even faster to tweet.
