BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha update coming soon

According to the BlackBerryDev Twitter account, it looks like an update is coming soon to the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha. Originally these devices were provided at BlackBerry World 2012 to all BlackBerry Jam attendees. RIM is also extending this offer out to developers attending the BlackBerry 10 Jam tour which is coming to many major cities around the world. The current OS on the device resembles the BlackBerry PlayBook and does not contain applications other than the Camera and Setup. Again, the ultimate goal of the device is for developers to create applications for the BlackBerry 10 platform ahead of its release. So seeing an OS update is coming soon, we do not expect to see any BlackBerry 10 user interfaces, but perhaps just bug fixes in the background. In addition, if you’re currently using the device, be sure to submit any issues as the new update is currently underway.

BlackBerry 10 Jam Keynote Video Now Available

The VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders provided some more myth busters on stage exemplifying that BlackBerry development is growing and not declining. In addition, we had the opportunity to see what developers are up to with the BlackBerry 10 platform so far which was definitely exciting to see. Here’s the full keynote for those who want to watch and could not make it out to the session in Orlando.

It looks like some screenshots of what’s ready so far of BlackBerry 10 have been leaked out. The folks over at Know Your Mobile and Cnet put up some photos of the device where we get a closer look at the homescreen and overall user interface. In addition, we see the BBM application swiped from the right side. So far everything looks clean, but we want to get more of a hands on already! Currently developers have the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, but the OS does not resemble BlackBerry 10, and more or so of a miniature version of PlayBook OS.

Facebook for BlackBerry updated to v3.1.0.9 in Beta Zone

Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones received an update today to version 3.1.0.9 in BlackBerry Beta Zone. It’s not much of a jump from the previous .7 version. There is a change log for this one so you can see what’s new:

Status Cleared notification doesn’t make sense
Update help URLs for Facebook 3.1
Got a state that could not exit Facebook setup wizard if Facebook opened from other access points
No photo on post
Facebook does not update while on Wi-Fi. Mobile Wi-Fi does work however.
App takes very long time to refresh comments.
Clicking “resend” on a status update doesn’t seem to work
Focus is lost after scrolling thru a very long post.
Likes count incorrect in Likes list if launched from stagnant comment screen
Doesn’t work on Wi-Fi only connection
Send icon is missing in command screen
User is not able to scroll to Facebook title bar to open navigation screen on the new chat conversation screen if cursor is not at the beginning of text box
Comments for Notes are limited to 1000 characters while on the web the limit is 8000
Event Created By lists incorrect name
BBM Text for check in is not localization friendly and might cause issues in other languages
Focus order on comment page
Focus jumps to the top of the notifications list after marking an unopened notification as opened

BlackBerry 10 predictive text coming to Jailbroken iPhones

It looks like the awesome BlackBerry 10 predictive keyboard which we saw demoed at the BlackBerry World 2012 keynote is coming to the iPhone unofficially. The iOS version is being referred to as the Octopus Keyboard which can be obtained after a jailbreak. The application is still in its alpha state so you can’t grab it just yet. So BlackBerry smartphones have spoofed iOS icons in themes before, and here we see BlackBerry functionality being used on iOS.

BlackBerry 10 Jam World Tour Dates

BlackBerry Jam is going on a world tour as we were told at BlackBerry App World 2012. RIM has announced all the official dates for the tour and it looks like it’s going to a lot of major cities. The good news here is that they will be giving out BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices in each city, but only a limited amount as it is not guaranteed for everyone. Here are the dates for the BlackBerry Jam World Tour:

BlackBerry Bridge updated to v2.0.0.31

Previously we saw BlackBerry Bridge update to version 2.0.0.30 which addressed the issue of autocorrect on Bridge applications. Now we get a small update once again to version 2.0.0.31 which addresses the issue of Bridge being disable in OS 7.1. It doesn’t look like a PlayBook update is coming with this one. The update is available at BlackBerry App World.

Make and receive calls on the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha

Back at BlackBerry World 2012 and BlackBerry Jam, developers were given prototype BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices which are strictly for creating applications for the new BlackBerry 10 platform. It was discovered that the device could receive calls, but there was no way to answer as a phone application is not present. All you would hear is ringing but nothing to display on the screen. This one seems like a no brainer, but the folks over at N4BB made the discovery that connecting a Bluetooth headset enables you to be able to make and receive calls on the device. There’s your workaround!

RIM Announces Approval of BlackBerry 7 Smartphones for U.S. Department of Defense Networks

DISA Mission Partner Conference, Tampa, FL - Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ: RIMM; TSX: RIM) today announced DoD-wide approval for the use of BlackBerry® 7 smartphones. Working with U.S. Army and Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) sponsors and partners, BlackBerry 7 smartphones have undergone successful testing through Army labs leading to a subsequent listing on DISA’s Unified Communications Approved Product List (UCAPL).

The approval allows all DoD customers to use the following BlackBerry 7 smartphones on DoD networks:

BlackBerry® Bold™ 9900 and 9930 (touch screen with keyboard)
BlackBerry® Torch™ 9810 (touch screen with slide out keyboard)
BlackBerry® Torch™ 9850 and 9860 (full screen touch screen)
BlackBerry® Curve™ 9360 (keyboard)

Next BlackBerry Bridge update to bring SMS & Connect over WiFi support

The next wave of BlackBerry Bridge looks pretty interesting as CrackBerry mentions that a new update is coming up with some cool features. The first feature is SMS text message support for Bridge applications. Doing so will allow you to use your PlayBook strictly when connected over Bridge without having to take your BlackBerry smartphone out (unless you have to make a phone call that is). In addition, Bridge will bring connectivity to smartphones over WiFi rather than just Bluetooth which is a definitely a great alternative. I’m wondering how the WiFi connectivity will work though. Will it Bridge if you are using the mobile hotspot feature on your BlackBerry smartphone and connect the PlayBook to that network or do both devices need to be on the same network? Maybe both?
