Fancy Characters, which is an alternative application to Picticons, has just went through an update a few days ago. As we are a bit late in mentioning, it was still necessary to give you the heads up as to what has been added in this version. So what’s new in v2.2 of Fancy Characters? We now see all the world flags available to select which is a huge advantage over Picticons if you ask me. At first I was disappointed with Fancy Characters because it was really laggy when inserting a smiley and Picticons seemed to load a lot faster. Now the load speed has been optimized so that’s not even an issue any more. Also, all the image footprints are six times smaller making it easier to browse through all of them. If you haven’t received an email notification to update, you can log in to your account by clicking here or use the link below to check out the application if you haven’t purchased it yet.

To clear out some of the confusion floating around, Verizon’s all new Push to Talk BlackBerry services won’t be restricted by the device, but will be included in the later OS build. In this leaked PDF we came across from via CrackBerry, it shows a BlackBerry Tour 9630 have this PTT (Push to Talk) attributes. So could this be why Verizon is taking ages with its official OS 5.0 for the 9630? Perhaps. But PTT services seem to be really exciting coming to Verizon although we saw it turn to a failure with other carriers such as AT&T where no one really used it. So part of me says it may fly, while a big part says it’s going to nothing but a failure based on past experiences. Who remembers the good old Motorola V60 which came in a version with some sort of push to talk services? I remember that releasing, and making its way off the market fast as it was such an embarrassing failure.

Features:

Connect with team members in the next room or across the country.

Make group calls with up to 50 participants.

Use Presence to see who’s available for Push to Talk calls.

Manage Push to Talk contacts for your entire company online.

Access email and the Web while you’re on Push to Talk calls.

Verizon’s Push to Talk services will be only $5 per month as an add-on feature to your BlackBerry plan and will be available as early as the beginning of April.

We all know how amazingly easy it is to read emails on our BlackBerry smartphones. It’s also no secret that other mobile devices used to read email have become incredibly popular, particularly among college students. Some of these devices include Android, iPhone, and yes the BlackBerry. Earlier today as I found an official email from Rutgers University (the college I go to) talking about mobile email.

“The service has experienced an extraordinary increase in demand for email reading. This appears to be due to a sudden increase in the use of mobile devices for accessing email. Service access has increased over 40% since the end of last semester and requires us to make some major adjustments to service configurations. We expect this work to significantly improve service performance”

So universities nationwide (perhaps worldwide) may be adjusting their email servers now or in the near future to help accommodate student need for email on the go. This is something that you can expect to affect your school as well in the near future.

We’re a bit late in putting this out, but there’s a time for everything I guess. Switching BlackBerry seems to be a dilemma with many today, and we’d like to make sure you all are properly doing it. Tragic incidents such as resending folks your new PIN is just sad. There’s no need for that. Now we all will hit this task one time or another so after talking to Mac we decided it would be good to write up a guide on how to ! (The easy way) I am going to run 2 guides. 1 guide is for all you Berry lovers who don’t have access to your own PC. The other is for those who do. First up, no access to your own PC. Let’s go!

Objectives:

To switch device.

Tools:

1 x new blackberry

1x old blackberry

Google mail account

Before I start there are many ways and programs to do the same task but as it is my personal device switch guide I am only putting what I have done and the way I have done it, you may have better ways and if so feel free to comment, this is for the new and need help berry people!

So I will start by giving you a little background about my phone life. I used to be a windows mobile man, broke my phone so bought a pearl 8120. I then upgraded my phone to a 8900, 3 month after I was running a 9000. Seven months on from 8120 I am running a 9000 and a 9700. So you can see I have had a few BlackBerry smartphones. All in under a year! I am a lover of Google and their available software for BlackBerry’s so that is what I use. Now to try to put this in a easy user guide I’m going to run through it step by step. All links to software and additional information will be at the end of the guide, so if you are unsure of something it will be explained at the end.

Please note: you will not have any software or data on the phone, this guide is for basic switching of devices for those without use of a pc. This will place contacts and mail accounts back onto the phone. Any Software will have to be re added again, if it is freeware you can re add with ease, if it is purchased you will need to read their information on device switching from the company you bought it from.

1.	You need to have run Google sync to make sure all contacts on your Google mail account are up to date
2.	You should run a backup on your messenger contacts. I recommend backing up to memory card in a different location then stated.
3.	You need to have a password set up for your instant email account to access on internet
4.	Any files on BlackBerry move to memory card if not already
5.	Place phone simcard and memory card into new phone.
6.	Once device has booted up you will receive an email from BlackBerry, this will just tell you that your device is registered with the wireless network.
7.	You will then need to Move email accounts over to the new device, you do this from your instant email account.
8.	You will need to download Google sync onto your phone and then run it.
9.	If your device has the old messenger on it you will need to update
10.	Restore messenger contact list, then run a quick broadcast

Magic you are done.

Below is the detailed information you may need if you are fairly new to the BlackBerry world or maybe just did not know about it
1.	Google sync is a application available by Google to enable you to synchronise your contacts to Google mail. If you have a Google mail account you can use this. So if you do not then you will firstly need to open a account. Once this is done you need to load Google sync onto phone m.google.com once Google is on phone and you have updated permissions you need to do a reset or a battery pull, the stress I had first time trying to run Google sync and it not working all because I did not do a battery pull!
So after the reboot you just type email account and password into the sync application, follow the instructions and all your contacts will load up onto your Google mail account.
2.	Contacts on BlackBerry messenger are backed up using your email or backup file on your device. When swapping I recommend making a backup onto memory card. I also recommend putting it outside of its normal save location. (each device has its own pin and creates its own folder so it is easier to store in a location you can find easily.
To make your backup, go to: menu < backup> < Back up files locally> (make sure save backup file to media card)
You will then get a save file screen, move up so you highlight the small folder icon then select it, you will then go into a file manager style screen, it will ask you to select/explore. Click media card, (it will bring up a menu) Blackberry you will now be in your main area with a list of your files (music, pictures etc) press menu and select here. Now save. (note the save file has the date)
3.	When you put your email onto your phone you would of used the BlackBerry internet service, you will need to add a password onto your account so you can access from a pc or from another BlackBerry when needed (to resend service books, add new mail account or change device)
If you have done this and can’t remember contact your service provider and get the information.
4.	If you already have a memory card you should have any items saved directly onto this. Like pictures, videos, downloaded email attachments. if you do great, if not it will take you a while to move everything you want to keep without a pc, I recommend always using memory cards as it is better for storage and when you plug phone into pc and enable mass storage you can access memory card directly.
5.	I hope you don’t need help with this one
6.	Wait for email, should come through once phone signal has stabilised
7.	Everyone has different network operators so got o browser and run a Google search “blackberry internet services” you should find what you want (www . instantemail. )
Once you log in you will then be asked if you want to swap devices for email, click yes!
8.	Go to m.google.com and download Google sync on new device, accept new permissions then reboot phone. Once that is done you add username password and run sync, it will put all your contacts from Google mail back onto your phone
9.	If your phone has the old messenger on it (some devices do) you need to load the new one on. Now if you are unsure load it, to get it go to www.blackberry.com/mesenger or download via BlackBerry app world, you will need to install app world to your phone www.blackberry.com/appworld
10.	When you open BlackBerry Messenger it will ask you to place your name or restore contact list. Select < restore contact list> in the file menu keep selecting until you get to select/explore media card or device memory.
If you saved it like I suggested you then select then scroll down the files and you will find you’re save data at the bottom, select it and it will restore messenger contacts.
Once contacts are restored from your contact list Select menu and broadcast message, write something (hi all just changed device) and send it to everyone. The reason I say this is if while you were changing your device someone tried to message you they will have lost you as a contact, but you can re add them by doing the broadcast, this is because you will be told they are no longer in your contact list and then given the option to delete or re add them.

Guide 2

Objectives:
•	Full device switch including personal phone settings
Tools:
•	New BlackBerry
•	Old BlackBerry
•	Pc
•	BlackBerry Desktop Manager
This is easy and will transfer all your data, notes, any mail in the inbox contacts etc.

First off for safety backup your BlackBerry messenger contacts in case you have to update your messenger.(step 2 in guide 1) Then make sure you have a password on your instant email account.(step 3 on guide 1)

If you haven’t already done so install the desktop software onto your pc, you should have the disk in your phone box.

Ok we are ready to go for it now.
•	Run desktop software and plug your old phone into the pc using the data cable for your BlackBerry.
•	If you BlackBerry asks you do you want to allow mass storage select no. if you have password protection you will need to type your password in. Once your phone is connected it will show you your pin at the bottom left.
•	All you need to do is select the device switch wizard, select switch blackberry devices.
•	The next page will give you options, you can now connect your new phone if you have access to another USB slot, or you can add it at a later time, on the right you can choose what to copy over, you will want to make sure you copy third part applications and device data and options. If you want to update your device (if a update is available) then select the available box.
•	Then let the device wizard run.

When it is finished you may need to check out step 9 from guide 1 (if the new messenger was not installed)

Once your simcard is in the new phone and you have got your registered to the network email you can then move email accounts over to the new device. (see step 7 on guide 1 )

For all those who were seeking how to do this, we hope this has been a help!

What we have here is a nice little Casino game for BlackBerry. Not to get so much into all the birds and bees, you get to start off with a nice virtual $1000, play a while and end up a virtual $5000 overdrawn! Don’t worry you can reset the bank at anytime.
