We never got to see the side view or what the guts look like from the back. I’m glad to see rubberized buttons, meaning this isn’t such an early prototype. Why oh why must it be so thick though? I understand it has slider capabilities with the keyboard and all but we’re in 2010. We have a paper thin iPad coming around the corner, you mean to tell me we can’t have a paper thin BlackBerry? Tour2 9650 Confirmed To Be The Official Bold 9650

That’s it. We officially have a very confusing series. The Bold family is just as confusing as the Curve family, only worse. So RIM doesn’t want to discourage current Tour users by calling it the Tour 9650, so they flip the name to the famous Bold to attract everyone. In reality, this 9650 is a Tour cosmetically and at heart. Nothing about it is Bold, and we are all unhappy about this new addition. The image above comes from a leaked user guide found over at CrackBerry for the BlackBerry Bold 9650, not Tour, not Tour2 but BOLD. The link is dead now as this was released late last night, but now you know.

Crucial OS Update Coming Soon For Verizon BlackBerry Curve 8530

This has to be the best news I’ve heard all day! I’m currently very unhappy with the current BlackBerry Curve 8530 with Verizon. Currently, I am getting very poor battery life, while it sucks to see others who have 8520’s go on for over a day. Adam over at CrackBerry has spotted that Verizon will be officially releasing an important big update for the 8530 bringing it to OS 5.0.0.508. Some main features in this new OS will be:

Simplified lock-key function
Overall improvements to battery life
Improved video streaming
Improved Voice Activated Dialing function
Message enhancements
Bluetooth improvements

Stay tuned for more from Verizon as they get ready to unleash this official OS update.

Verizon To Make Customers With BES Express Upgrade Their Data Plans

The whole idea behind BlackBerry Enterprise Server Express is that if you have any BIS plan on your BlackBerry, you’ll be able to use it. Verizon seems unhappy with BESX and have decided to force users who user BESX to upgrade their data plans to the corporate rate. I couldn’t imagine RIM approving of this at all, and I sense some dispute will be occurring over this. Hit the jump to check out the official memo from Verizon.

RIM pointed out the exact requirements of having BESX upon launching it. First is a BlackBerry smartphone. The obvious requirement to get BESX of course. Second and lastly is a BIS (BlackBerry Internet Service) data plan which racks up to about $30 a month in the United States. Higher data plans range at $45 or so, but that’s for BlackBerry users getting some BES on. The huge question is, will Verizon make a data plan separate from BIS and BES, just for BESX users? Below is the leaked memo passed on through Verizon:

On March 1, 2010, RIM will launch BES Express (BESX), an entry-level version of BES.As with all Corporate email solutions, customers will need a corporate email data plan or feature added to a voice plan to allow access to BESX.

Note: Customers on the Email and Web for BlackBerry $29.99 data feature MAY NOT utilize BESX.

Overview:

BESX replaces BlackBerry Professional Software (BPS) in RIM’s product lineup and allows businesses using Microsoft® Exchange or Microsoft Small Business Server to support up to 75 BlackBerry subscribers without having to purchase Client Access Licenses (CAL) or a dedicated server. Additional users can be supported if BESX is installed on a dedicated server.

With the launch of BESX, RIM will discontinue the sale of BPS. Verizon Wireless will sell through our remaining BPS inventory and RIM will continue to support this solution for the foreseeable future.

Customer Information/Eligibility:

BESX will be available directly from the RIM website. Customers should be directed there for additional product information.
BESX will not be available directly from Verizon Wireless.
As with all Corporate email solutions, customers will need a corporate email data plan or feature added to a voice plan to allow access to BESX

Honestly, this has me shocked. Finally a beneficial business solution for BIS users (that’s free) and someone has to object against it. What would you do as a Verizon customer?

Review: BuddyGuard – Protect your BlackBerry & Personal Data

Not so long ago I did an in depth review on SmrtGuard. Given that I loved the app, I decided to try a similar one, smaller and more basic. Everyone’s issue is memory these days. Not everyone, but those who have their BlackBerry smartphones crunched with lots of emails and apps. Memory becomes less of an issue these days with the newer BlackBerry devices out with their extended memory. So BuddyGuard is pretty much a lighter version of SmrtGuard doing some similar taskts.

Features:

alert – locks phone and makes a lovely noise
lock – just locks the phone
locate – sends your location details but does not lock the phone
list – gives you a list summery of phone details
help – give you list of commands if you cant remember
wipe – only do if you have really lost! (It removes Calendar, Contacts, Emails, Phone Logs, Memos, Tasks and Files on your SD Card and in Device Memory.)

So whats the benefit of BuddyGuard over SmrtGuard? It is a interesting question as both have good and bad points. I’m going to run a nice list below and let you all make your own choices!

Both applications are free, but SmrtGuard has a subscription option

SmrtGuard (with subscription) does full remote backup BuddyGuard does not, however do you really need it?
SmrtGuard has a nice interface on pc, BuddyGuard does not, however if you have misplaced your phone all you want to do is lock it down and locate.
With SmrtGuard You can do any of the above features on the PC interface or email, however BuddyGuard does the same by email or sms. What is quicker? grabbing a phone and sending a text or jumping onto a PC?

So far I would agree that SmrtGuard is a nicer application but we don’t want nice we want action! and we want it NOW!

So I give you a quick scenario, you are out for lunch and you have just left the pub, realized you have misplaced your phone.

Do you :

Quickly borrow someones phone and send a text to lock and alert
try to find another blackberry or phone with email and send a mail
run home and log onto PC
run to work and log onto PC
run around in circles with your hands in the air

This is where I start to favor BuddyGuard. Its simplicity is the key. But this does come with a few flaws.

The first thing I noticed is if you have a key lock and it is active, then you wont get the BuddyGuard menu pop up. This was easily solved by removing the password lock on the phone. Not everyone would like the idea of that.

One other is with the location, if your phone is inside you will just get a GPS is unavailable message back. The final thing is when you send the messages they still come through to the phone, this is not really a big deal as the phone locks. One other good feature is on the lock screen it gives your details and the option to call the owner. Finally you are also using a lot less memory on BuddyGuard. Unlike SmrtGuard it does not run in the background so you have more free running memory as well.

So SmrtGuard or BuddyGuard?

For myself, I have moved to BuddyGuard. You should try it out too as it is free. SmrtGuard has its freebie too so you’ll have to try each one and see which suits you best.

We’ve had one hectic week of BlackBerry OS leakage and here’s a great way to end it off. Here’s for all your angry BlackBerry Tour 9630 owners who are mad Verizon still hasn’t released an official OS 5.0. If you’re on the Sprint network, then I guess you can try this for you know what and giggles. So here’s OS 5.0.0.548 for the BlackBerry Tour 9630. Mute Button No Longer Puts BlackBerry In Standby Mode

Based on the recent OS updates out there (OS 5.0 and up) and Bla1ze’s speculation on the matter, the mute button no longer puts the BlackBerry in standby when pressing it down for a few seconds. Will standby forever be missed? I don’t think so. I’m another one of those people who never understood its true purpose. Although I did see people use standby a lot instead of traditionally locking it, but for me it didn’t make any sense. So goodbye to standby mode. I’m proud of RIM for taking out the unnecessary feature.

It annoyed most folks trying to figure out how to use the all new leaked emoticon and smileys for BBM. Sure there’s the traditional ones but a couple weeks ago we showed you the exclusive and unreleased ones ranging to about 300 in variety. Copying and pasting them was a pain as they appeared to be blocks in any other app besides BlackBerry Messenger. You could surely add them to AutoText, but it’s not so convenient remembering all your custom words you added for each smiley and picture icon. Instructions:

Open BBM 5.0 and start a chat session.
Choose “Picticons” from the menu and select an icon.
Press the trackpad, trackball or touch screen to insert.
