We’ve heard rants and seen a few rumors about RIM’s soon to be released BlackBerry PlayBook supporting Android applications.  The folks over at ShopSavvy are saying that there has been three instances already of a BlackBerry smartphone handling their Android application allegedly.  Here’s their log:

  • BlackBerry 8300 ran ShopSavvy on January 31, 2011
  • BlackBerry 8600 ran ShopSavvy on January 17 and 24, 2011
  • BlackBerry 8520 ran ShopSavvy on February 7, 2011

These stats come from Waterloo, Ontario in Canada…which yes, is where RIM is based out of.  The device model numbers are a bit strange though.  We have the BlackBerry 8600, which was the Curve 3G at one point, but is now the 9300 series.  Then we see the 8300 which is the FIRST generation Curve, which barely has any juice.  Then there’s the 8520, which has been discontinued and replaced with the Curve 3G 9300.  All three of these devices appear to be from the Curve family, but why? It doesn’t make any sense now, but I hope the picture’s clearer soon enough.

You can see the analytics charts over at ShopSavvy.

It looks like AT&T is discontinuing several BlackBerry models.  I’m shocked that the BlackBerry Curve 8900 stuck around.  Who remembers when T-Mobile gave it up? That was ages ago!  Then again, it feels like yesterday when Tmo launched it.  The beloved BlackBerry Bold 9000 is calling it quits too, which is sort of upsetting.  The Bold 9000 was a great device because of its larger size with a bigger keyboard and screen.  RIM seriously need to roll out another device looking just like it but with better specs of course.  The next additions discontinued are the Curve 8310 and 8520.  Well it’s about damn time.  The Curve 8310 is ancient and unnecessary.  As for the 8520, we’ve got a Curve 3G 9300 to replace it with so it can join the 8310 in the trash as well.

Of course, how could we forget the BlackBerry Curve 8520? So the Bold 9000 and Curve 8900 got the OS leak, making it routine for the Curve 8520 to as well.  Here’s OS 5.0.0.1036 for the BlackBerry Curve 8520.  It’s the latest OS leak for this model as well as for the original Bold 9000 and Curve 8900.  It is a leak so download and install at your own risk.  Also, let me take this as an opportunity to remind you all that BlackBerry 6 will NOT be coming to the BlackBerry Curve 8520.  We’re still getting tweets and comments asking about a launch date for that, when we specifically said that the device is not supported.  So best bet is to put one of these later builds on your Curve 8520.  Links after the jump!

The BlackBerry Curve 8900 and BlackBerry Curve 8520 both got the same operating system leak today.  Both stand at 5.0.0.1022, being the latest version available anywhere.  I’m not so sure how many more 5.0 updates they can do, but it definitely is impressive to see that go along still for these older devices.  In any case, if you have a Curve 8900 or Curve 8520, feel free to grab this one.  We’ve got a few download mirrors below after the jump.

As the devices seem a bit “outdated” they are still around and certainly still popular.  T-Mobile put out OS 5.0.0.822 for both the BlackBerry Curve 8520 and BlackBerry Curve 8900 officially.  The .822 seems to be quite common with OS 5.0 now and it seems to be a pretty stable OS to install.

We got the word from several T-Mobile retail locations that the BlackBerry Curve 8520 is not on shelves right now.  Whatever left over devices are hanging around can be sold, but T-Mobile is not sending any more in at all.  Some employees have also told a new device is expected to come around September to make up for the 8520.  Curve 9300 anyone? This isn’t huge news, but it’s a bit odd how the Fuchsia red Curve 8520 came out around the same time the white Bold 9700 did (not too long ago) and now it’s all been halted.  I guess both Verizon and T-Mobile are getting rid of this device.

There’s no word on AT&T as they are hiding discreetly hopefully unveiling the 9800 Slider soon.  Keep in mind they do also have a Curve 8520 on shelves but it seems to me the 8520 was not such a big hit with AT&T, but more with T-Mobile and Verizon.  So what else is going to be halted soon? Will we see the Bold 9700 go away and have the 9780 take its place when OS 6 come out?  Or will RIM impress us all by having OS 6 support the 9700?  Back to the 8520, I guess this is it, and it will be an end of life device as well from T-Mobile.
