Well that BlackBerry Curve 8980 we’ve been hearing about throughout all last year has finally launched in China for the China Mobile carrier today.  At the beginning of the leaks, everyone was wondering why a new Curve was hitting the streets with no 3G connectivity, but it was later known to be a Curve specified for China’s standards.

On a side not, a BlackBerry Bold 9788 will be launching, which is RIM’s first TD-SCDMA device.  It will be very much like the BlackBerry Bold 9780 we have today (assuming so) but with the specific 3G technology that currently exists in China.  It will not work on other 3G networks, so the Bold 9788 is a specific cater to the country.  The image above is what the Bold 9788 looks like, so you see it’s hasn’t received a facelift at all.

We heard bits and pieces of the very Bold 9700 series lookin’ BlackBerry Curve 8980.  It’s most likely going to replace the BlackBerry Curve 8910 we see in Asia as we’ve seen leaked images of the 8980 branded for China Mobile already in the past.  There’s nothing crazy to see about simulator as it’s only running OS 5.0.  There’s no telling if it will ever support BlackBerry 6 as we don’t know much of anything on this device other than a few specs: 256MB memory, it runs EDGE with no 3G, 480 x 360 resolution, 3.2MP camera, trackpad, WiFi, GPS, and supports UMA.

It appears that documentation on the totally unannounced BlackBerry Curve 8980 we’ve been hearing bits and pieces about has hit the FCC.  The BlackBerry Curve 8980 seems to be the next generation Curve 8900 as it isn’t as basic as the 8500 or 9300 series Curve we see today.  For a while I imagined that the Curve was just going to turn in the the entry level Berry, but it looks like RIM is going to continue its efforts making a mid-ranged model as well – hence the 8980.

Here’s another round of the BlackBerry Curve 8980 or “Atlas” as it has been spotted to be in the past.  It looks identical to a BlackBerry Bold 9700, just with a Curve keyboard.  I’m having a hard time understanding this device with all the whens and ifs about it.  It’s rocking a 3.2MP camera for instance and 256MB last time we checked, so when’s it coming out (if it ever does)?  Perhaps we’ll be seeing hit China Mobile exclusively to replace the not so hot Curve 8910.  Continue reading for the full image gallery.

Our friends over at BerryCn got some live screenshots of the BlackBerry Curve 8980!  The last I remember seeing this device is while we were at WES where it was pictured next to the BlackBerry 9670 clamshell.  So here’s the rumored 8980, and by the look of it, it’s heading over to China Mobile.  I guess we can assume it’s still under testing and will be coming soon after.  How about the US?
