BBM Music has officially updated to version 1.2.0.17 yesterday adding some features which we saw in the beta version in BlackBerry Beta Zone.  The new features in version 1.2 include:

• Ability to Favorite Songs and Contacts
• Intelligent Shuffle – by favorites or by genres
• More Context in Invites – invitation request displays common friend and lets you preview songs prior to accepting

Here’s a cool promotion video for BBM Music and how it can come in handy.  You’ll notice Greyson Chance, an American pop singer make his appearance in the clip as well.  Next we see a see an experiment where the Bold 9900 is used to connect to a car stereo by leveraging BBM Music.  The video overall is quite entertaining and definitely worth watching.

If you’re a member of BlackBerry Beta Zone, then you’ve probably been testing out beta versions of native applications which connect to BBM.  RIM has announced today several native applications updating in the next ten days which will be BBM connected.  Here’s a brief summary of them:

• Facebook and Twitter: Automatically share your Facebook status or latest Tweet with your BBM friends right from within the app.
• BlackBerry Travel: Share your travel plans and flight changes directly with select BBM contacts or with your entire BBM community.
• BlackBerry App World: Easily update your BBM profile to let friends know about the great new app you’ve just downloaded on BlackBerry App World.
• BBM Music: Recommend friends right from within the BBM Music app itself, making it easier for you to connect and expand your music collection.

BBM Music updated to version 1.2.0.13 yesterday in BlackBerry Beta Zone. In version 1.2, we see quite a few improvements.  Luckily, a change log has been attached outlining all the new features.  Here’s the full change log:

• Invitation Requests: Discovering similar musical tastes just got easier! When an invitation request is sent from a ‘friend of a friend’ through Recent Updates you will now be able to view songs and the common friend before accepting/declining an invitation.
• ‘Favorite’ Songs and Contacts: You can now highlight songs or contacts as favorites in BBM Music 1.2! To favorite a song, you need to click on the star displayed in the top left hand corner while listening to a specific song. When the star is highlighted yellow, this will indicate the song as a “favorite” and you will now be able to access this song through “favorite songs” on your profile tab. Favorite songs will be displayed to your friends in Recent Updates
• For a favorite contact, when you visit a contact’s page you can select “favorite” from the top menu bar. This will add a highlighted yellow star beside the contact’s name in the contacts tab which will only be visible to you. You will now have the ability to search by “favorite” contacts within the contacts tab.

There was a beta out for users in Canada a few days ago, but now that’s over and users all over can download version 1.1.0.12.  Although this update doesn’t include a change log, we a have an idea of what to expect based on the beta that was released a few days ago.

Payment Enhancements

• Ability to Request a Gift – Users can ask their BBM Contacts for a subscription to BBM Music.
• Added Notifications – Splat notifications to continue free trials and prior to first subscription charge

BBM Music has an update available in BlackBerry Beta Zone today.  Unfortunately this one’s only for Canada residents but perhaps we’ll get it in the US soon.  As for the change log, there’s a few goodies here including payment enhancements, search improvements, and usability improvements.  Here’s the full change log of version 1.1:

RIM announced this morning that any users who download(ed) BBM Music December 16th to January 4th will get four free months of BBM Music. Might be disappointing for some of you that had the app way before but a great offer for new users. Head over to BlackBerry App World and download BBM Music to get your free holiday offer!

Usually AT&T is the difficult carrier to deal with.  It was such a hardship with BlackBerry Bridge on the BlackBerry PlayBook and then NFC being blocked on the all new BlackBerry Bold 9900.  AT&T has tweeted up that they will be offering two free months of BBM Music to its customers- sweet!  The tweet reads that you should check your media folder which should have a link to download BBM Music and get the free two month trial.  Otherwise you can download it from BlackBerry App World.

BlackBerry makes gum now? No, this is just some promo being given out to stores that sell BlackBerry smartphones.  This in particular is from Boost Mobile BlackBerry reps who are giving out packs of gum in this sleek packaging with BBM Music ads all over it.  There are 12 pieces of gum included in each pack in rows of 2. 

The idea here is to pitch BBM Music to Boost Mobile customers.  Boost Mobile’s BlackBerry plans are $60 per month, and after your BBM Music trial is over, it’ll bump up to $65, which is still cheaper than many other carriers which have you locked on a contract.  Boost Mobile also provides bill shrinkage where your bill will decrease by $5 every 6 months (by $15 total).

Here’s an interesting video I came across on the BlackBerry YouTube channel called “The BBM Music Power 50.”  To sum it up it shows music leaders from Australia together sharing their top five songs of all time.  Together they created “BBM Music Power 50” which is a combination of all their favorite tracks.  It’s an interesting video to watch which is all music but gooes in reference to BBM Music.
