According to the BlackBerryDev Twitter account, it looks like an update is coming soon to the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha.  Originally these devices were provided at BlackBerry World 2012 to all BlackBerry Jam attendees.  RIM is also extending this offer out to developers attending the BlackBerry 10 Jam tour which is coming to many major cities around the world.  The current OS on the device resembles the BlackBerry PlayBook and does not contain applications other than the Camera and Setup.  Again, the ultimate goal of the device is for developers to create applications for the BlackBerry 10 platform ahead of its release.  So seeing an OS update is coming soon, we do not expect to see any BlackBerry 10 user interfaces, but perhaps just bug fixes in the background.  In addition, if you’re currently using the device, be sure to submit any issues as the new update is currently underway.

Many can agree that the BlackBerry 10 Jam keynote was very influential for developers and anyone else who attended.  The VP of Developer Relations Alec Saunders provided some more myth busters on stage exemplifying that BlackBerry development is growing and not declining.  In addition, we had the opportunity to see what developers are up to with the BlackBerry 10 platform so far which was definitely exciting to see.  Here’s the full keynote for those who want to watch and could not make it out to the session in Orlando.

It looks like some screenshots of what’s ready so far of BlackBerry 10 have been leaked out.  The folks over at Know Your Mobile and Cnet put up some photos of the device where we get a closer look at the homescreen and overall user interface.  In addition, we see the BBM application swiped from the right side.  So far everything looks clean, but we want to get more of a hands on already!  Currently developers have the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha, but the OS does not resemble BlackBerry 10, and more or so of a miniature version of PlayBook OS.

It looks like the awesome BlackBerry 10 predictive keyboard which we saw demoed at the BlackBerry World 2012 keynote is coming to the iPhone unofficially.  The iOS version is being referred to as the Octopus Keyboard which can be obtained after a jailbreak.  The application is still in its alpha state so you can’t grab it just yet.  So BlackBerry smartphones have spoofed iOS icons in themes before, and here we see BlackBerry functionality being used on iOS.

BlackBerry Jam is going on a world tour as we were told at BlackBerry App World 2012.  RIM has announced all the official dates for the tour and it looks like it’s going to a lot of major cities.  The good news here is that they will be giving out BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices in each city, but only a limited amount as it is not guaranteed for everyone.  Here are the dates for the BlackBerry Jam World Tour:

  • May 29 – Milan, Italy
  • May 31 – Barcelona, Spain
  • June – California
  • June – New York
  • June 5 – Austin, TX, USA
  • June 12 – Paris, France
  • June 14 – London, UK [Updated to June 14]
  • June 21 – Toronto, ON, Canada

Back at BlackBerry World 2012 and BlackBerry Jam, developers were given prototype BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices which are strictly for creating applications for the new BlackBerry 10 platform.  It was discovered that the device could receive calls, but there was no way to answer as a phone application is not present.  All you would hear is ringing but nothing to display on the screen.  This one seems like a no brainer, but the folks over at N4BB made the discovery that connecting a Bluetooth headset enables you to be able to make and receive calls on the device.  There’s your workaround!

Last week we were able to see RIM’s preview of BlackBerry 10. We did not get to see much, but it was certainly enoughbto make you want to see more.  Now it looks like a few screenshots have leaked out which seem to be showing off a cool screen sharing feature along with the native Twitter client.  For the Twitter client, there’s not much to get all crazy excited about- especially when you see a screen sharing feature being shown off right next to it. If you recall back at BlackBerry World where RIM showed the BlackBerry 10 teaser video, there was one part where the the image on the BlackBerry 10 smarthphone displayed on the screen came up on a near by television with the press of a button. Based on these screenshots, we see that is a festure to expect. Think of it as a wireless AirPlay for iPhones and iPads, but for BlackBerry devices instead.  Hit the jump for more screenshots.

During the keynote, we got to see glimpse of BlackBerry 10 and what to expect out of it.  Unfortunately, the OS was not on the BlackBerry 10 Dev Alpha devices, as the goal there is strictly for developers to make apps for the platform rather than test out what RIM has cooked up so far.  Here’s a video RIM posted up showing highlights from the keynote at BlackBerry World 2012 where BlackBerry 10 was demoed.  It’s definitely a lot more than we expected and certainly can’t wait for the initial launch.

During the keynote at BlackBerry World 2012, we were introduced to a Porsche Carrera which is powered by BlackBerry 10.  As seen in the video, two BlackBerry PlayBook tablets are in the back headrests, and the head unit in the front sports a PlayBook as well.  As the CEO mentioned, these are all managed in one system as they are not three PlayBooks running on their own.  We’ve seen RIM show off cars powered by BlackBerry in the past, so this shows off BlackBerry 10 being enabled in the vehicle as well.
