I don’t know how many of you are still using the BlackBerry Storm 2, and the 9520 at that, but there is a new OS update for it rolled out by Vodafone DE.  This is OS 5.0.0.1077, for the 9520 model only, NOT the 9550.  We’re currently in OS 6.0, and getting into OS 6.1 and 7 in the near future, but OS 5.0 is still great and works well on the Storm 2 in my opinion.  Click the link below to download it directly from BlackBerry.

Just last week, MTS launched the BlackBerry Style 9670, and it looks like the device has entered as a holiday promotion item already.  As the price was only 100 bucks to begin with, MTS is putting it out for free from now until the end of the month.  Also, the BlackBerry Bold 9650 is running at $29.99 and the Storm 2 at $99.99.  This is a bit funny to see the older devices holding their prices higher than the hot and fresh Style which just launched for the carrier.

So just when you thought the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 was not getting any more updates, a new one has rolled out.  Ehab let me know that he got a new OS for his Storm 2 this morning.  This one we were expecting to see roll out since we saw the leaked version not too long ago.  Verizon Wireless has picked this version up officially so you’ll be able to download it on your computers, and hopefully OTA.

Well when are they going to stop? It’s a bit much to see a 5.0.0.1015.  That should very well be a BlackBerry 6 OS as they’ve taken it way to far with Storm 2 builds. Any way, if you’re still rockin’ a Storm 2 9550, you can feel free to grab this leaked version.  Back to 6.0, it didn’t work well at all on the device according to the rumors circulation, so I guess it was best to stick with 5.0, and update it to its maximum potential – hence the .1015 version.

A month ago we let you know about the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 and Curve 8530 getting in the EOL (end of life).  At that time we thought the dates were set to August but it looks like they are split between September and October instead.  PhoneDog has posted a screenshot showing the specific dates they’ll be shutdown for good.

  • BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 – 10/10/2010
  • BlackBerry Curve 8530 – 9/16/2010

So the BlackBerry Storm 3 or as many are calling it the “Storm refresh” has been rumored to hit Verizon in October, just as the original Storm 2 9550 is expected to shutdown for good.

This is pretty cool.  The past hybrids for OS 6.0 weren’t all that visually nice, but with the help of leaked versions of BlackBerry 6 today, hybrids of course got a whole lot nicer.  If you’re wondering how it runs on your BlackBerry, view the video we embedded above (or click the mobile link if you’re browsing via BlackBerry with no webkit of course).  This is a hybrid OS so only install it at your own risk guys!  Also, keep in mind that it is indeed only for the BlackBerry Storm 2 9520 and not the 9550.  Download and install at your own risk once again, but enjoy it if you do give it a shot.

Miscellaneous Thoughts »

Just a shot in the dark, but it looks like a BlackBerry Storm 2 to me.  On the other hand, the new Storm is supposed to be a refreshed version of the Storm 2 so who knows.  What we do know now is that Verizon has halted BlackBerry 6 testing on the Storm 2, but we don’t know how permanent that is or if they will ever go at it again.  Ronen from BerryReview points out that an 8500 series BlackBerry makes an appearance quite a few times in this BlackBerry 6 Developer Briefing but again it could be the laziness of the person who put it all together.  Or could it be that the 8500 series Curve and the Storm 2 will sport BlackBerry 6?

On the Vodafone UK forums, an administrator addressed a question on future availability of the BlackBerry Storm 2.  And as you guessed right, they are selling the device until their out of stock on the device.  Could we have any more obvious hints that another touch screen BlackBerry is on its way soon? The Storm 2 is already an end of life device come August.  So what’s next in line? Storm 3? Revamped Storm 2? Slider 9800?

It’s a bit crazy seeing the BlackBerry Storm 2 9550 go down just like that.  When I think about it, I feel like it was too short lived of a device.  Then I remember last week where we saw Verizon BlackBerry Storm 2 OS 6 testing ceased.  Was making it an end of life device a decision after the testing failures or was it going down any way?

Second in line is the BlackBerry Curve 8530.  So what.   We have a Curve 9300 which is pretty much the same device as the 8530.  Everyone calls the Curve 9300 the 8500 series Curve with 3G.  Well guess what folks – the Curve 8530 did have 3G for those who forgot already.  Goodbye 8530!  Hit the jump to check out the full notes on the end of life devices and when their replacements are expected to launch.
