Exciting news for everyone today, not so much for the blogs who reported that there is no mention on a BlackBerry tablet today.  Oh well.  In any case RIM has announced the BlackBerry Tablet rocking out some awesome features including:

  • Full HTML 5 and Flash v10.1
  • 1GHz processor with 1GB RAM
  • Ultra Thin – 9.7MM
  • 7 inch screen

I’m loving it so far and we’re still in the keynote where they’re discussing and exemplifying what the PlayBook can do.  Stay tuned for more!

The latest news on the BlackBerry tablet is that it will NOT be sold as soon as we had expected.  According to the Wall Street Journal, an internal note to clients from RBC Captial’s Mike Abramsky was sent out saying otherwise.  As a result, the tablet will now be available sometime in the first quarter of 2011.  Let’s face it – with the name trademarked and a release date being too soon after seemed a little too good to be true.  First quarter of 2011 sounds just about right for a tablet to launch from RIM.

Well it’s sure a lot better than BlackPad.  Even current BlackBerry users frowned upon the name and saw it as a big time copycat name to the Apple iPad.  SurfBook isn’t all that great but it’s sure a lot better than BlackPad which is an obvious jab at the iPad.  Let’s hope this is for the tablet as we expect to see them roll out sometime in November.

So RIM has filed for the Canadian trademark “SurfBook” according to Tablets Unleashed who have put up this screenshot showing some sort of proof.  There is nothing really to read up on the official trademark so it could be for anything.  BlackBerry SurfBook does sound like it should be a tablet, unless RIM is hitting up the netbook industry now.

So far, the idea of a BlackBerry tablet has been far too blurry and very unclear.  We’ve had mixed contradicting specs leak out.  For example we did hear of it coming being a 7 inch and 9 inch, which RIM could very well make both but is just too doubtful to have from launch date.  Today we read on Bloomberg that the BlackPad (the rumored name for the device) will be running an operating system by QNX which they recently had acquired.  All along we thought a “revamped” version of BlackBerry 6 OS would take its toll on the device, but the latest leaked inside information suggests it will not.

The idea here for the BlackPad is to have a production tablet, rather than a consuming device like the iPad.  I’m really curious to see what will be done here, how my BlackBerry will sync with this tablet if possible, and what applications do they have in store to compete with the iPad and even Android tablets out there.

UPDATE: According to Engadget, pricing is rumored to be at $499 and launching in November.

The guys over at BBLeaks spotted this image above showing that Quanta is manufacturing the BlackBerry Tablet, or the BlackPad as it has been rumored to be the official name.  The rumor is set at 2 million units to be made initially, with 8 million total by 2011.  Here’s a quick recap of the leaked and rumored specs:

  • Front face and backside camera
  • 9.7 inch screen
  • 1GHz processor
  • 1080p video playback
  • Full webkit browser (yes, Flash support)
  • BlackBerry OS – maybe one specific for the tablet
  • WiFi with no rumor on a 3G model yet

So is it a 7 inch or a 9.7 inch tablet? We’ve been going back and forth between the two, but I certainly do prefer the 9.7 incher.  According to Engadget, RIM’s tablet is coming this November “officially.”  There is no word when it will readily be available, but the announcement has been rumored to be in the month of November.  Next in line is the name.  The other day we let you know about RIM registering BlackPad.com but it was speculated to be that they bought it just for the sake of others trying to mimic or copy a product.  Well if the rumors are true, “BlackPad” is going to be the official name of the BlackBerry tablet.  Sad as it sounds, and Apple fanboys will forever laugh in our faces for it.  Let’s hope the rumor is not true, and we see last minute changes like the BlackBerry Tour 2 to Bold.  More after the jump!

So BlackBerry Torch it is? BBRocks posted about blackpad.com being purchased by RIM, and I did have in mind a few days ago to check out BlackBerryTorch.com to see if RIM owned it.  Seeing the post reminded me to do it so I went ahead and checked that out.  Just as you guessed, RIM does own both domain names.  Not so excited for this “BlackPad” but I hope RIM doesn’t plan on calling that their tablet and get a bit more creative.  As for the Torch, can we safely assume this is 9800?  I would like to say yes, and hopefully we get to see some of that in action on Tuesday.

Of course as we guessed, the majority did say yes.  That answer though comes more from people answering it in the sense that they want to indeed see BBM implemented in the tablet, rather than thinking it through on whether or not it will be offered.  So what do we know so far about this BlackBerry tablet? Not much at all other than a few specs and the fact that it will have an BlackBerry OS on it.  BlackBerry Messenger would be nice to have it, but even beyond this poll, it seems to be quite a mystery as whether or not RIM will implement a registered PIN to each device allowing BlackBerry Messenger to be there.  A crazy thought I had was that it would be nice to be able to use your current BlackBerry BBM on the tablet, but that is much to ask and it’s too far fetched of an idea.  So the poll results for whether or not the BlackBerry tablet will have BBM goes as follows:

  • Yes – 86%
  • No – 10%
  • I don’t care – 4%

Just yesterday, we gave you some leaked details on the BlackBerry tablet aka BlackPad which is expected to make its big debut by the end of the year.  We learned that it will have two cameras (one on the back, one front face) with a 1GHz processor and a 7 inch screen rather than the original 8.9 inch we expected a few months back.  Today we learn that the tablet will be Flash supported.  Now I know we’re getting OS 6.0 by the end of the summer or September (according to the rumors) and yesterday’s BlackBerry 6 teaser from RIM says it is “coming soon” so Flash in a tablet which is launching at the end of the year shouldn’t be a surprise to me since the OS should support it by then any way.  To explain all that in a simpler way, BlackBerry 6 aka OS 6.0 is supposed to support Flash.  With a tablet launching in December let’s say, we’d expect it to have Flash also as it is launching after OS 6.0 already has.

I stumbled across an interesting post on Cnet where some details have been leaked out by analysts on this new BlackBerry Tablet aka BlackPad we keep hearing about.  This is what we make out of the tablet by RIM so far:

  • 1GHz Armada 610 Processor
  • 1080p Video Playback
  • 16MP camera captures
  • 7 inch screen
  • Back & Front Facing Camera

All of these details sound good enough to make me want to drop my iPad.  Not yet though.  Besides specs on the unit, there’s other things we need to see work magical such as a functional and easy application store.  We assume a variation of BlackBerry App World will be on it, but hopefully there will be more enhancements to it and developers get going with making apps early on.
