It’s been fun checking out Bolt Browser over the years.  Especially way back when the BlackBerry smartphone did not have a rich web browsing experience.  Bolt Browser worked well on phones which didn’t access the web nicely at all, even non-smartphones.  But it’s all coming to an end now as the company announces the service will be discontinued due to economic circumstances.

Surely there are other third party web browsers out there such as Opera.  Have any of you been stuck on Bolt Browser or have you found yourself using the native web browser or any others?

Thanks ecivon for the tip!

So just yesterday we finally got an update for Bolt Browser, as we haven’t been hearing about the app for quite some time now.  Now with BlackBerry 6 we have a webkit browser, but Bolt has providing that whole “desktop browser” experience.  Bolt Browser has been around for years now, and we pretty much want to see who uses the browser now.  It could be primary, secondary or whatever.  Cast your votes in the poll, tweet us, or leave us comments!

It’s been a while since we heard anything from BOLT, but they are still sticking around and doing what they do best.  As many don’t use their browser now with the ready to go webkit browser in BlackBerry 6 OS, BOLT still has plenty of advantages so you should definitely check it out.  Here’s the full change log in version 2.5

  • Geolocation support : BOLT 2.5′s geolocation feature allows a user with a GPS enabled device to pass latitude and longitude information to location enabled websites through the browser.
  • Expanded coverage of video sites, Release 2.5 supports playback of videos on Facebook.
  • Upgrade to Webkit 5 in BOLT’s cloud.
  • Even greater HTML5 support. BOLT continues to lead the way for support of HTML5 standards amongst mobile browsers. BOLT 2.5 supports HTML5 audio and video streaming while providing the highest compliance with HTML 5 standards compared to all other browsers in the space.
  • Revamped user interface. Get access to BOLT’s most frequently used features in lesser clicks with a more streamlined layout, menu structure and help. Widgets are now available through BOLT homepage.
  • Download Manager has been upgraded to maintain download history even after the exiting the browser and resume last download after browser re-launch.

Earlier this week we let you know about Bolt Browser getting a new update with quite a few new features.  Now it looks like they have updated once again , this time from v2.30 to 2.31.  There is no change log, and given that this was just silently done we assume it is nothing more than some bug fixes.

Bolt just announced on their forum this morning that they have updated their Bolt Browser to v2.3 adding some cool new features including HTML5 support.  Here’s the full change log:

  • View streaming flash or HTML5 videos from sites like YouTube, MySpace and MTV
  • Enjoy Twitter and Facebook widgets with BOLT’s web app platform
  • Easily switch between multiple sites with tabbed browsing
  • Post to your Facebook or Twitter account directly from BOLT while you browse
  • Backup your favorites in the cloud
And yes, it works on the Torch.  Comparible to the stock WebKit browser? Pages do indeed load faster but I see it being not so touchscreen friendly.  That’s where the trackpad comes in handy of course.  Either way, it’s a great alternative browser to try out, especially if you’re trying to hit up some embedded media.

Bolt Browser is a good alternative to get your web browsing on until RIM officially releases the official Webkit hopefully soon.  Ronen from BerryReview posted that they just got a tiny update today, probably just minor bug fixes if that.  Point your BlackBerry Browser to boltbrowser.com today to update it.

I haven’t used Bolt Browser in quite awhile and fired it up this morning for some close to real web browsing only to find that there was an update available to v2.1.  So what’s new in this version? We have the webkit updated and widgets seem to be working a lot smoother now.  Facebook integration is a lot better than before as you can chat right in the website.  That’s right, Facebook Chat now works.  I didn’t try a full out conversation but did see that the list was visible and i could see the conversations open.

As we promised you late last night, Bolt Browser 2.0 has officially launched with tabbed browsing.  But that’s not all!  They provide a separate download link for those who’d like to set Bolt as their default browser as well.  Whether you have Bolt Browser or not, point your BlackBerry Browser to boltbrowser.com and select the appropriate download for you.  Enjoy.

As you all know, CTIA starts tomorrow morning, and we’re all excited to see what pleasant surprises and releaes will be coming up.  For starters, we got the word from Bla1ze over at CrackBerry that Bolt Browser 2.0 will be officially launched tomorrow, adding tabbed browsing capability.  Pretty cool right? As Opera Mini goes into its official stage offering that same spec, Bolt Browser has stepped to the plate adding that too, plus their cool widgets.

Stay tuned for more tomorrow as Bolt Browser 2.0 gets released with tabbed browsing.
