There have been quite a few rants and rumors about Android applications being supported on the BlackBerry PlayBook, but there was never any solid info. The other day we saw claims that an Android app was already running on a few BlackBerry models as well. We don’t get to see it hands on in this video, but if you listen closely to this PlayBook demo video from MWC 2011, you’ll hear the PlayBook rep mention “we’ll also support Android apps.” I guess that’s pretty clear and safe for us to assume that yes, the PlayBook will indeed support Android applications. We’ll still keep it as a rumor until we get an official announcement.

We got to see some 3D action last week with the BlackBerry PlayBook at Mobile World Congress 2011, but here’s another clip showing you some more. Of course you don’t get the full 3D effect in this video, but you can very well tell how intense it would be if you were there live with 3D glasses. Rubik’s Cube makes its appearance here once again and we see other visuals such as photo galleries and application icons. These are all concept apps by The Astonishing Tribe, only to tease us as to what to expect further in BlackBerry PlayBook development.

Some big news this week at Mobile World Congress 2011 was RIM co-CEO Jim Balsillie announcing NFC chips in most BlackBerry smartphones coming out this year. In this video we see RIM’s Andrew Bocking explain the birds and bees in NFC and how it will be useful in BlackBerry.

So we’ve seen the Aura Weather and Scrapbook applications by The Astonishing Tribe (TAT) for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Both were really fascinating to see, and now we see some more action with even cooler applications. Simon from IntoMobile got a nice hands on with some 3D action with the PlayBook connected via HDMI to a 3D television. My favorite part is the Rubik’s Cube in 3D. Although you can’t see things pop out of your screen in this video, you’ll get a good idea of the great things to expect from TAT in the BlackBerry PlayBook.

Here’s a fun video from an event at Mobile World Congress 2011 called App Circus. In App Circus, developers have the opportunity to present Super App concepts to RIM judges and get feedback. I see it as a BlackBerry version of American Idol. So check it out and see what developers are looking to bring to BlackBerry.

SPB TV is a nice application available on many different platforms, one of which is BlackBerry. At Mobile World Congress, they have announced SPB TV 3.0, which takes on a whole new ball game. Originally, the app allowed you to watch television shows and switch stations as you pleased. They launched their 2.0 app which became free not too long ago. Now their different approach is becoming an app store. So you’ll have an application where you can purchase media to watch, or just view it for free if the content is free. Get it? There are no live demos yet, but as mentioned in the press release from yesterday, they’ll be demoing it over in Barcelona.
Also, no mention of which mobiles get this first has been made, but we do know SPB TV is supported on BlackBerry, so we’re hoping we get the first hand on this one along with the others.

Over the last month, we’ve seen leaked specs and images of the next generation BlackBerry smartphones. One of the specs we saw was Near Field Communication chips built into most of the new models, and today at Mobile World Congress, Jim Ballsillie (RIM’s co-CEO) confirms that these chips will be built into BlackBerry smartphoens this year. It’s nice to see RIM caught up in the league with that as NFC seems to be a big deal nowadays with Android devices and the next generation iPhone is supposed to rock it as well. We got a little glimpse at the NFC SDK for BlackBerry as it leaked out not too long ago. Hoping developers are on the roll with it from now. Can’t wait to see what apps roll out on NFC enabled BlackBerrys.

We’ve been wanting to see where TAT has been putting its efforts in the BlackBerry PlayBook, and in this video we see a quick demonstration of a weather application they built in less than a week using the all new BlackBerry WebWorks. It’s pretty cool how the app works with the accelerometer of the PlayBook, but this is just a small example of all the great wonderful things that can be done with WebWorks.

Here’s a quick demo of the Scrapbook application for the BlackBerry PlayBook. Scrapbook basically is an app where you can check out pictures right on your tablet and play around with them as you please. The coolest part? All the pictures sit on a clothing hanger and you slide left and right to browse through them. Awesome.

In this video, we see the BlackBerry Developer Day overview in Mobile World Congress 2011 over at Barcelona with Mike Kirkup, RIM’s Director of Developer Relations. The event has kicked off quite well so far, not to mention that BlackBerry Messenger has won an award for being the best BlackBerry app.
