Shortly after we saw Wikitude for BlackBerry 7 OS update to version 6.3.4. There’s no change log, but this is quite a big jump from last time. If you spot anything new, let us know!

Wikitude was strictly for BlackBerry 7 smartphones. Back at BlackBerry World 2011, we were able to see it working on the Bold 9900, which had just gotten announced at that time. Today at DevCon Asia 2011, it looks like Wikitude has expanded to BlackBerry 6 OS! So what about Wikitude requiring specific hardware for augmented reality? OS 6 devices obviously do not support it, but the app still does integrate with BBM and lets you find friends on a map so you can communicate with one another.

- Invisbile- No one can see you and no BBM information is shared.
- Contacts- All your BBM contacts can see you.
- Public- ALL other BBM users can see you.
It’s really cool to be able to open your BlackBerry messenger up to anyone who has a BlackBerry. It’s kind of like having Pinwall or being part of any one of the many pin sharing sites, but the benefits to this you don’t have to keep updating your pin, or searching through pages and pages of contacts. You can easily open Wikitude, and see who is in your area, and increase BBM contacts that way.
Of course those who are afraid of sharing information with strangers, can keep it to invisible so no one can see them in the Wikitude application. Or you can set it up to where only your BBM contacts can see you.
So download Wikitude and hold up your device and explore your area with BBM integration. Now the question remains how will you set up your privacy settings? Will you choose to be seen or not to be seen?

Wikitude for BlackBerry got updated over the weekend to version 6.0.13 and yes with a change log! Since the official launch of the app, we’ve been seeing a couple updates which were mainly bug fixes rather than features. Here’s the full change log for the latest update:
- Option in settings screen to show BBM contacts only
- Added menu option in list view to sort BBM contacts first
- Added “bring me there” button to POI detail screen
- Permissions for resetting the idle timer and input simulation are now optional, no longer mandatory
- Standby while being in cam view is now disabled

In case you didn’t know by now, Wikitude provides a service on their BlackBerry app which isn’t available for other platforms – BBM. Upon opening up Wikitude, you’ll see different categories to browse including Closest, Worlds, Wikipedia, Gowalla, Flickr, YouTube, and even BBM Chat! By clicking BBM chat, you’ll see users who are around you using augmented reality. You can view them through your camera, or click the button up top to see users in a list.
Now if you don’t want to participate in your BBM pin going out in the open, you can have it set as Invisible in options (I think that’s what it is by default).
Either way, there’s a bunch of apps and websites out there for BBM social networking. Wikitude gives it to you sort of by showing who’s around you with a BBM photo of the user and some basic info. Are you tuned into it already?

Are we already on version 6 with Wikitude for BlackBerry? Yes actually even though OS 7 devices just launched. It’s not like we started at version 1 with it any way. For those unaware, Wikitude is a free app that has been pushed out a lot for BlackBerry 7 devices bringing you augmented reality. Find anything around you including BBM users (creepy), places, and more. Unfortunately for v6.0.8, there is no change log, and App World might not have this version out yet, but when launching Wikitude you shall be prompted to update.

Wikitude was originally presented to us at BlackBerry World earlier this year with its announcement of BlackBerry support for OS 7 device. The key behind Wikitude is augmented reality where the application displays your camera and points out what’s around you including BBM contacts that are connected. For those who haven’t heard of it before, you can read more on their blog. There are other applications that tell you what’s around you such as the popular one Poynt, but of course it doesn’t give you the same augmented reality experience that Wikitude does.
So those who currently have OS 7 devices, are you using Wikitude at all? Let us know!
